US MACRO NEWS IMPACT ON PRICES
1) Prices respond to unanticipated US news in the initial 5-mins:
– for eg. Non-Farm Payrolls, PPI, GDP, etc appear significant.
2) News impact on volatility gradually disappears after the first 5-mins:
– with less effects after 15-mins;
– totally disappears within 2 hours.
3) Price responses to news are symmetrical in the initial 5-mins:
– positive and negative surprises brings about some effect;
– effects at least in the first 5-mins.
4) Evidence suggests an over-reaction effect:
– more during bad times in contrast to good times.

Dr. Chan is an award-winning quant trader, professional valuer and research scholar
from Singapore. With 20 years of work experience, his career includes roles in JP
Morgan, Franklin Templeton and UBS while he has managed 300 million USD in FX
derivatives. Having started one of the first few funds that trades the CSI300 stock
index futures with PingAn Group, Dr. Chan has taught more than 3,000 students
and has presented in various investment and academic conferences. Dr. Chan
graduated from the National University of Singapore and Macau University of
Science and Technology in real estate, finance and management. He was the
President of the NUS Graduate Students Society. He holds the UBS diploma and
also completed strategic marketing executive education from Harvard. His research
includes hotel sector real estate securitization and real options to undercover
