 This temple was started by
Augustus in 42 BC; Julius
Caesar’s funeral was held
there
 It was dedicated to Caesar
After the Battle of Actium in
29 BC
 It rested on a podium where
speeches were held
 Several portions of the
foundation are seen today
 It was a meeting place of
the people to discuss
current affairs
 There were three divisions
of those people—gentes,
military, and tribes
 The first was made by
Tullus Hostilius
 Caesar built a Curia on the
site of the Curia Hostilius
after it was destroyed by
protesters
 It is an arch erected in celebration of
the war victories of Septimius Severus
and his two sons Caracalla and Geta
against the Parthians and Osroeni
 There are three arches, the middle one
being the largest
 There are four reliefs, each showing
scenes from the wars
 Caracalla ended up killing Geta and
removing his name from the arch
 It has the oldest known Latin
inscription
 It is an old style altar with a
column with the inscription
on it
 The inscription is a curse
against anyone who tramples
the inner room of the site
 The Romans claimed it was
the tomb of Romulus
 Erected in 78 BC by Quintus
