Fort Jesus is a 16th century Portuguese military fort located in Mombasa, Kenya that was built between 1593 and 1596. It covers an area of 2 hectares and has withstood numerous battles and 4 centuries of the equatorial climate, maintaining its excellent Portuguese architecture. The fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Visitors to the fort should take malaria prevention medication, apply insect repellent at dusk, carry bottled drinking water, wear breathable fabrics, and be aware of potential visits from vervet monkeys in some hotel rooms.
