Formal Proposal
During task five I came up with five possibleMastheads; ‘Safe’, ‘UMAG’,
‘Eminence’, ‘Gnarly’ and ‘Supreme’. I havedecided to usethe word ‘Gnarly’
which is a slang term used to describesomething extreme both in good and
bad cases. The word is used to describe both perfection, danger and skill. I feel
it is an appropriateMasthead as I feel it defines the type of content I wish to
cover throughoutmy product, I wantthe content to be controversialand by
choosing ‘Gnarly’ as my masthead I feel I can begin to do this. I opted not to
use either ‘Safe’ or ‘UMAG’ as my Masthead as I feel they are too simplistic. I
also never chose ‘Eminence’ or ‘Supreme’ as I feel it could potential create a
unwanted tittle of arrogancesurrounding my product. Only an audience can
define a productas supreme and proclaiming my product is myself could come
across as arrogant.
For my genre I choseto do urban contemporary over rock and pop. I wanted to
appeal to not justa particular audience, urban contemporary music covers a
range of modern urban genres. Urban music is extremely popular at the
minute and I feel it is a perfect time to create a magazineproductthat focuses
on the genre. However in choosing this genre I except that it isn’tpossibleto
include all the genres that make up urban contemporary music so the main
body of my productwill focus on grime but I will include links to most of the
genres include in urban music.
As I have chosen to produce a productthat focuses on the urban
contemporary genreit will have a broader target audience than justone
particular genre. However as I have previously mentioned the main body of my
magazine will focus on grime which means my target audience will changed
slightly as although grime is on the up rise it doesn’t quite appeal to the
masses as yet. Considering this my target audience will be white British and
Afro-Caribbean males and females aged between 16-20 as I feel this is the type
of people who aren’tjustlistening to grime but also urban music, the main
bulk of artists that will feature in my magazine are fromthese backgrounds
and therefore that is the reason why they are also my target audience. I have
also chosen to include females in my target audience as I feel they will enjoy
the articles included about charts and “top must haves”.
My initial ideas for my Frontcover are that I wantmy Masthead to be the
clearest and boldest item on the page as I feel it is a word that can help create
brand recognition. I wantthe masthead to be the main selling point and not
the model on the cover. I also wantmy frontcover to follow the normal codes
and conventions of usual frontcovers as I feel the normal layouts such as
having the masthead at the top of the page work well. However for my
contents page it will not follow the normal codes and conventions as it will
include a bigger insight into articles within the magazine rather than justa sub-
tittle and a page reference. Here I will include a small “Must haves” article that
will be aimed at females as it will include images of the type fashion must
haves for that particular month. I wantmy double page spread to have a
smooth feel to it and for it not to be cluttered. Colours such as Perl white and
metallic grey may be include to add a modern and futuristic feel. In terms of
content my double page spread will be about grime. The main purposeof this
article will be to try and show grime in a less criminal light.
Photography is going to be my mostdifficult task, I need pictures that are
symbolic and tell a story them-selves. I havealso thought about locations and I
think that staircases and balconies will defiantly be include in the productto
indicate how urban music is on the rise.
