Footprint Directions is a Northern NSW Australian sustainable development consultancy partnership. Based in the
shires of Byron Bay and Lismore, Footprint Directions provides a comprehensive management service for industry,
community and government. Since 2000, Gregory Hallett and Jane Oliver have a led a small team to develop
sustainability from the detailed, cost-based end of any initiative. We are delighted to welcome Lynton Burger and
introduce our new services. We provide management, measurement and facilitation services in the communities
who are interested in combining the three tiers of sustainability: economic, ecological and equity-based elements.
Carbon footprinting and reporting: a new service
Accessing best practice
Carbon audits and footprint studies completed by Footprint Directions follow the internationally
accepted GHG Protocol guidelines and methodologies. We are also making it our job to stay
abreast of, and contribute to international, National and State policies and best practices in this
rapidly developing area. Lynton brings a comprehensive portfolio of experience with small
business, non-government agencies and the corporate sector and has recently completed
GHG analyses for leading South African corporates Woolworths (large retailer), Liberty (insurer
and property developer) and Santam (insurance). This adds to Jane & Greg’s 7 years of
Northern Rivers & regional NSW attention to projects in Indigenous, Aged & Disability, Tourism
and other infrastructure & social developments.
Footprint Directions is
pleased to announce
the addition of our
carbon footprinting &
reporting services. This
has come about from
the arrival of Senior
Associate Lynton Burger.
Lynton is a corporate
sustainability specialist
with particular but wide
experience and interest
in the area of carbon
footprinting and
reporting.
This new and interesting
development is a natural
extension of our existing
services, in sustainability
stewardship and
management consulting.
For example, we can now
help clients in the planning
and development of
sustainability-conscious built
communities, working on
independently bench-
marked audits for carbon
emissions.

Defining
boundaries
Defining the
organisational and
operational
boundaries for clients’
carbon emissions
monitoring and
management
programmes forms the
first step in the process
of understanding and
beginning to reduce
carbon emissions.
Clients can establish
programmes at one
site or for the whole
organisation.
Here, Footprint
Directions will guide
clients in terms of the
Australian National
Greenhouse and
Reporting Act (2007)
and more recent
Regulations Policy
Paper which sets out
the company and site
specific thresholds for
reporting of GHG
emissions.
2
Carbon audits
A carbon audit is typically
performed to begin to
understand and quantify
sources of greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions.
Typical sources of GHG
emissions, that we will
begin to quantify as part
of a carbon audit include
emissions from:
• the direct burning of
fossil fuels (such as
petrol and diesel used in
road transport);
• the production or use of
electricity (which in
Australia is produced
mainly from burning
fossil fuels);
• burning of fossil fuels
during corporate air
travel;
• fugitive emissions from
refrigerant gas (e.g.
those used in air
conditioning);
• waste material
produced.
3
Managing
and reducing your carbon
footprint
Quantifying and
understanding the nature of
your carbon footprint
facilitates the development of
a carbon monitoring and
inventory management
system. This will in turn
underpin clients’ corporate
carbon reduction strategy.
Footprint Directions assists
clients to develop robust,
pragmatic programmes,
management systems and
strategies aimed at reducing
GHG emissions and reaping
the benefits of doing so.
It’s a dynamic, often confusing
area. Footprint Directions
provides sound, practical
advice on reductions targets
(and how to achieve and
finance them).
We look at your carbon offset
options and carbon trading
possibilities. We do this always
with your overall reputation,
commercial (or competitive
funding) and branding
strategy in mind.

Sustainability reporting
Communicating performance
in terms of GHG emissions and
reductions, forms part of an
organisations’ sustainability
report, most often part of the
Annual Report (AR).
Sustainability reporting is a
moving target with standards
being raised year by year.
No organisation wants to be
caught out greenwashing
particularly in the area of
climate change, given its
increasing prominence in
society. Broad-brush
statements and vague
promises don’t cut it anymore
…
Lynton Burger has several
years specific experience
assisting corporate clients with
reporting sustainability KPI
(including key environmental
KPI related to GHG emissions),
following the international
Global Reporting Initiative
(GRI) guidelines.
Footprint Directions is there as
a trusted partner to ensure
that sustainability reporting is
material, accurate and
complete.
5
Sustainability branding –
pulling it all together
Developing sustainability brand
attributes should be the end
goal for any organisation who
wishes to have an ongoing
competitive advantage in
today’s global marketplace.
Forward thinking organisations
are those that understand that
environmental, social and
governance (ESG) responsibility
and performance involve more
than risk management, more
than compliance, more than
the efficient use of resources,
more than ethical social
behaviour … more than
following the herd.
Stakeholders (shareholders,
customers, supply chain
partners) are becoming
increasingly enlightened in
terms of climate change and
other environmental issues.
They are asking questions,
demanding to know more
about the attributes of the
products and services they are
buying, the values behind and
beyond the basic brand
attributes of use, price,
convenience, financial
investment value.
Demonstrating a deeper
understanding and developing
an intelligent response to
tackling climate change, as
well as other sustainability KPI,
presents a contemporary way
of building your brand.
Examples
High-level sustainability
branding work by Lynton:
Assisting Grindrod, the
international shipping and
logistics group, with the
collation of environmental
KPI (including GHG
emissions) involved in
crafting its sustainability
report in line with the GRI
and subsequent successful
submission to the
Johannesburg Securities
Exchange (JSE) Socially
Responsible Investment
(SRI) Index, raising the
companies public relations
profile ahead of the
groups listing in London;
Completing the strategic
research and
benchmarking related to
the supply and demand of
green building products
for Massmart, Africa’s
largest fast moving
consumer goods (FMCG)
wholesaler, allowing it to
position itself and plan for
expansion in this growing
market segment;
Working over a period of
six years with South African
top retailer Woolworths
(sister company to the UK’s
Marks & Spencer) on a
wide range of initiatives,
interventions and projects
(including completing the
firms first GHG analysis)
that have culminated in
the companies widely
publicised “Good Business
Journey” strategy that is
cementing the companies
image as a good
corporate citizen.
Sustainability has now
become a core brand
value.
