The poem describes a father reminiscing about walking on the beach with his son and father. He remembers tracing his father's footprints in the sand and the life lessons his father taught him. As an adult with a family of his own, he now understands what his father was trying to teach him. He hopes that when he passes away and meets his father again, his son will carry on the lessons and values he taught, representing his "footprints in the sand."
1. FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND
CHRIS SLOCOMBE & DANIEL SLOCOMBE 3/1/15
I remember walking with my Dad on the beach
And how he held my hand
I remember thinking how big he looked
Tracing his footprints in the sand
I remember all the things he told me
About life, he tried to teach
I’ll treasure that day, like no other day
Walking with Dad, along the beach.
Years passed by, now I’m all grown up
I have a wife and a family
Now, I understand what he was trying to say
‘Cause of the joy they bring to me
To have your son of your own, your own flesh and blood
It’s a pleasure to watch him stand
And I know that one day
When I go to meet Dad
You’ll be my footprints in the sand.
2. CHORUS} x 2
Yeah, my footprints in the sand
Footprints in the sand
And when I leave this earth
To go meet my Dad
You’ll be my footprints in the sand.
The thing’s Dad taught me, over the years
My Son, now I pass on to you
You’ve only one shot at this thing called life
So do the best, that you can do
At first you will stall, you’ll find it real hard
You won’t know which way to stand
But remember the things, passed down to you
You’ll be my footprints in the sand.
CHORUS}x 2
Yeah, my footprints in the sand
Footprints in the sand
And when I leave this earth
To go meet my Dad
You’ll be my footprints in the sand.
3. Life’s passed me by, but I’ve had a good run
Now I’ve gone, to be with my Dad
The circle of life, is carrying on
You have a child, so don’t be sad
When you look at their face
You’ll see me there too
I’m by your side, yes that’s the plan
So pass on the thing’s, I taught you my Son
They’ll be your footprints in the sand.
END CHORUS}
Yeah, my footprints in the sand
Footprints in the sand
When I leave this earth
To go meet my Dad
You’ll be my footprints in the sand,
Footprints in the sand
Footprints in the sand
If you teach them well
As you watch them grow
They’ll be your footprints in the sand.
