FOOD POISONING
Food poisoning
It occurs when food or water contaminated with harmful germs (microbes), toxins or
chemicals is eaten or drunk.
Signs and Symptoms
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhea (may be bloody)
• Abdominal pain and cramps
• Fever
• Headache
• Weakness (may be serious)
Symptoms will often start within 2 - 6 hours of eating the food. That time may be longer
or shorter, depending on the cause of the food poisoning.
Treatment
• Take a rest
• Give your stomach a break
• Take the recommended dosage
• Take a break from dairy products for a few days
• Drink a rehydration fluid
Prevention
• Wash your hands frequently
• Use clean cutting boards and kitchen tools
• Don’t eat undercooked meats or eggs
• Keep meat and vegetables separately
• Wash fruits or vegetables well
• Store frozen or refrigerated food at the proper temperature
