Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle helped spur the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The novel exposed unsanitary conditions and exploitation of workers in the meatpacking industry. This led Congress to pass the first law regulating the safety of food and drugs in the United States.
