Room 6 presents… Fizzing and Foaming: A Scientific Inquiry
The Big Questions! Why does coke always fizz when you open the bottle? How do you get the bubbles in a coke bottle? What happens when you mix things that fizz with things that don’t?
The Big Ideas…. Substances have physical and chemical properties that can be described. We can use these properties to group substances. We can investigate the properties by observing how it reacts with other substances When a chemical change takes place, new substances are formed.
HOOKING IN
Experiment 1: Zing and Zizz! What you need: Acids Lemon juice Orange juice Vinegar Grapefruit juice
Experiment 1: Zing and Zizz! Carbonates Washing powder Baking powder Chalk Crushed eggshells
Experiment 1: Zing and Zizz! Other substances Flour Sugar Tea Vitamin C tablets (dissolved in water)
Experiment 1: Zing and Zang! What You Do Choose an ‘acid’, a ‘carbonate’ or another substance. Mix the two of them together Carefully observe what happens Test different combinations. Decide: Is it an acid? Is it a carbonate? Is it neither?
Experiment 1: Zing and Zang! BEFORE (Our predictions) “ It might fizz!” “ It’s because of the sugar…” “ When we mix the two things together it will fizz” “ When we open the container, it might explode!” “ When you mix the two things together they will make acid and burn through the table!!!!!” AFTER (Our observations) We described what the mixtures looked like…. Some Ideas were: Ice cream Pancakes Lava bubbles Scrambled eggs- omelettes Gassy flat coke Creamy melted butter Milo Cooking Melting A mixture of colours
Experiment 1: Zing and Zang!
Experiment 1: Zing and Zang! Recording our findings…. We asked ourselves the following questions: What were we trying to find out? What did we find out? What happened? What did we learn from these results?
Experiment 1: Zing and Zang! Vinegar and chalk Orange juice and baking powder What would happen when we mixed two substances together? Lemon juice and washing powder What did we learn? What happened? What did we find out? What were you trying to find out? Substances
ASK
WHY DOES IT FIZZ? So we wanted to know …….
Our first ideas… The washing powder causes it to fizz Because when you mix the two things together it gets really hot. Vinegar and baking soda don’t go together. The vinegar is really hot and that’s what made it bubble. The vinegar is bubbly Why does it Fizz?
Why does it fizz? When you mix a substance that contains an acid (eg: vinegar, citrus fruit juice) and a carbonate (eg: washing powder, baking powder, chalk, eggshells) the two react to make carbon dioxide gas. When the gas escapes it causes the fizzing!
