The origins of red prawns in Fiji began on the island of Vatulele, where they fell into rocky pools under the cliffs and turned red, filling the pools. Considered sacred by the people of Vatulele, the bright red prawns called ura-buta are believed to bring bad luck to anyone harming them, so the prawns are not caught or eaten out of respect.
