Nadezhda Kotlyarova, a Russian track and field athlete, tested positive for Meldonium, becoming the first athlete banned for the newly prohibited drug. Kotlyarova said she took a small amount of Meldonium before it was banned and considers herself innocent. Over 100 athletes from multiple countries have tested positive for Meldonium since tennis player Sharapova admitted using it, putting pressure on Russia's athletic federation for reinstatement ahead of the Olympics. Meldonium is prescribed for health issues but associated with improved sports performance and was commonly used in Russia and Soviet Union.
