Fire ! WEEK
                                                                                                 4

Recently we have had 4 fires / fire related events …..
    • 14502 – Fire under Secondary 2
    • 14474 – Coal mill fire
    • 14454 – Melted electrical plug with strong smell
    • 14446 – Transformer oil fire on W6

These events should act as a spur, and should cause us to question …..

 Have we checked our local area Fire Risk Assessment
 is it in place and up to date
              correctly identifies fuel sources
 correctly identifies sources of ignition
              specifies effective control measures
              has it been communicated

 We need to have a plan in place to carry out local area fire drills – don’t forget
that we need to record ….
               when they took place
 what learning was gained from them
 and what actions were put in place to improve things

 Ensure we have the right people trained to carry out plant fire fighting duties,
     and is their training current

 Make sure we are carrying out the right audits
 fire fighting equipment availability & frequency of checks
 escape routes, lighting & signage
 housekeeping checks (removal of combustibles)
 open ends & joint integrity
              spill kits
 flam store integrity & signage
Responsibilities

Minimising the risk is key !

Housekeeping checks (office or plant)…..

 make sure nothing is in contact with hot surfaces
 tidiness of desks and storage of paper – minimise how
     much is present
 ensure rubbish and combustibles are removed
 dust levels should be monitored & cleaned up if they
     exceed 2 mm depth

Mtce & Ops responsibilities

Leaks & Drips - oil spillages must be

   • cleaned up promptly
   • reported,
   • sealed / repaired to prevent reoccurrence

Fire Fighting Equipment – extinguishers & hose reels

   • check they are present
   • check they are in working order, and there is an
           adequate supply of water
   • report any damage so items can be repaired /
           replaced
