Nearly one million people are affected by natural disasters each year. When thinking about response and recovery, social media has become the go-to tool for those affected by disasters. The goal of this toolkit is to help nonprofits and community groups harness the power of social media and search engine optimization (SEO) in emergency and disaster situations. It builds on the lessons learned from the tremendous effort of hundreds of community groups, government agencies, and ad hoc groups during and after Sandy and proposes best practices, new tips, and tools for cost-effective online disaster outreach.

This white paper explores how to catalyze philanthropy among the next generation of wealthy individuals. It discusses how the $40 trillion being transferred from baby boomers to younger generations presents both a challenge and opportunity. While millennials with wealth are generally socially engaged, growing up wealthy can negatively impact social and emotional development in ways that reduce empathy and giving. However, research shows empathy and compassion can be strengthened through personal development support and community engagement. The paper argues for challenging negative views of the wealthy and promoting programs to develop empathy, with the goal of inspiring greater philanthropy that benefits both donors and society.

Electrons in atoms can exist at different energy levels. They can move between these levels by gaining or losing energy. Scientists have developed models like the electron cloud model to describe the possible locations of electrons around the atomic nucleus. Electrons are most likely to be found in certain orbital regions within the electron cloud. The arrangement of electrons in an atom's orbitals is referred to as its electron configuration, with the most stable configuration having electrons in the lowest possible energy orbitals.

Drivers of agricultural capital productivity in selected EU member satesMathias Kloss
This document summarizes a study on the drivers of agricultural capital productivity in selected EU member states. The study used farm-level data to estimate shadow prices for fixed and working capital, which were then analyzed based on financial indicators and farm characteristics. The results showed overuse of working capital across most countries and farm types, while overuse of fixed capital was less common. Only a small number of sectors appeared to have severely credit-constrained capital usage. Overall, the study concluded that EU agriculture is dominated more by overcapitalization rather than credit constraints.

Eugenics- Diversity Struggles in America (1) (1).pptxVincent Gumina
Eugenics was a popular early 20th century social movement in the U.S. that aimed to improve society by preventing the reproduction of those deemed "unfit." It led 32 states to sterilize over 64,000 Americans and targeted poor, immigrants, the mentally ill, and unwed mothers. While originally a scientific concept, eugenics was applied in a pseudoscientific way to justify racism and discrimination. Recent efforts have focused on removing the names of prominent eugenics supporters from institutions and honors to acknowledge its roots in scientific racism.

Medical Missions to Honduras by Lance WinslowLance Winslow
Honduras faces many challenges including poor medical care, lack of education, and difficult road and transportation infrastructure. The rural poor suffer from intestinal parasites and waterborne illnesses due to lack of clean water. Education levels are rising but more schools and teachers are still needed. Roads are mostly dirt and treacherous, especially during rainy season, causing accidents and limiting access. The country is also affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, landslides, and earthquakes which damage infrastructure and agriculture. Volunteers are working to address healthcare, education, and development needs.

The document summarizes findings from a report by the Treatment Advocacy Center on the treatment of individuals with mental illness in prisons and jails. It finds that 10 times more people with serious mental illness are in prisons and jails than in psychiatric hospitals. The report also finds that prisons and jails have few options for treating mentally ill inmates and often use solitary confinement. The root cause is identified as the closure of public psychiatric hospitals and failures of the mental health system to provide appropriate aftercare.
This document provides a list of media articles, presentations, and publications related to Dr. John Santopietro and Carolinas HealthCare System's work in behavioral health integration. Some of the key points mentioned include:
- Dr. Santopietro has given numerous presentations nationally on Carolinas HealthCare System's model of using technology to integrate and scale behavioral health services.
- Media articles describe the system's use of telepsychiatry and virtual teams to increase access to behavioral health care and reduce wait times, especially in emergency departments.
- Publications discuss integrating behavioral health into primary care settings and measuring outcomes of integrated models.
- Dr. Santopietro has advocated for reducing stigma around mental health issues
This document summarizes the history of racially segregated psychiatric hospitals in the United States and how they disadvantaged African American communities. It discusses how early leaders in the mental health reform movement supported slavery and proposed theories linking mental illness to African Americans gaining freedom. The first public psychiatric facilities for African Americans were established in the late 1800s and provided inferior, segregated care driven more by racist ideologies than scientific assessment. Racial biases persisted in psychiatric theories and practices for many decades and contributed to ongoing mental health disparities experienced by African American communities.
A presentation for students at the University of Aarhus as they launch a study of young people and news in Denmark. This presentation reviews findings from an ethnographic study of U.S. urban young people. The study looks at how newcomers to political interests become sutured into journalistic practices as produsers. It proposes that we are seeing the rise of a new form of journalism here identified as connective journalism. This theory builds on existing ideas of "produsage" (Bruns), ambient news (Hermida), affective publics (Papacharissi), and shareworthiness (Linaa Jensen).
Foundation leaders and experts agree that homelessness can be ended through proven solutions like supportive housing and moving people from shelters into permanent housing quickly. While helping those experiencing homelessness and health issues is challenging, supportive housing models have been shown to help vulnerable people get off the streets and access needed support. Ending homelessness requires cooperation across sectors and implementing what is known to work.

56. CINDY MIKUTA: INTERVIEW
LoveWorks director
Serving and Altruism: “Sometimes it's self serving, or for the
greater good, or even a faith based action or response.“
Serving: ”I know that I am a very selfish person, in my case it's
not altruism, it's more of a faith based response.”
57. WHERE COULD HOPE GO
FROM HERE?
Me: “I can see Love Works being an every day ministry, having service
projects for teens after school, or adults during the evening, and even
retired people during the day.”
Cindy:”More of a percentage actively participating on a regular basis.
I'd like to see serving go from something that's convenient to do, to
something that's part of their relationship with God as praying or
worshiping. On a mission plan, I'd like to see us funded, and a director
position paid. Branching out to 501C organizations, and the furniture
ministry to be it's own organization. Project Leaders. “

The compassion and care of others welfare affects how you treat them. If you love someone, or feel bad for them, you are more likely to “serve” them. \n
Service gives me something to do that makes me feel good about myself. It helps people and shows people a caring feeling. When I see people happy it’s an amazing feeling to know that my service did that. I’ve always been offered to do service, and that has shown ways that i never though i could do things.\n
To have concern selflessly for others feelings.\nBeing able to feel a certain compassion for other people that you start to feel sorry for them. \n
To do service in an altruistic way. Doing things to help the community or people in the community, usually a physical way of helping (painting, building, moving)\n
People want things to change, no matter good or bad, if you care that much that you want it changed, DO SOMETHING!\n
The Dali Lama feel that compassion is the most important quality when it comes to feeling empathetic. If people are having that feeling to feel bad for someone, they are also prone to feeling compassionate. \n
You need to not be selfish and start to feel bad for people, have pity on them in a time of trouble. try to feel their pain and want to help them, to actually help them, not for your own benefit\n
Having feelings for how other people feel, (tie in) having empathy and feeling bad for someone, while also trying to understand how they feel, gives you the feeling to want to help them, which can be seen as community service.\n
having empathy towards someone in need gives you a good feeling, but when you only care for their need, that is altruism\nhaving empathy towards someone who is upset/general is more for a rewards (i helped you feel better, what does that give me)\n
when we have our own feelings, we have emotions-when we see others emotions, it effects our own\nif you lack theory of mind (ability to attribute mental states—beliefs, intents, desires, pretending, knowledge, etc.—to oneself and others and to understand that others have beliefs, desires and intentions that are different from one's own) you only care about yourself and your own feelings\n
with empathy you can feel others emotions, as long as you know why they are sad and the details behind it\nconduct disorder is feeling others emotions, but directly (if someone is angry, you lash out. if someone is sad, you cry-INTENTLY)\n
An altruistic behavior is formed around doing something for someone else. Altruism is more of an observed behavior, not mental. Some altruistic behavior is at times idealistic and romanticized. Altruism is promoted by several important variables: the ability to be empathetic, to understand the perspective of others feelings of personal efficacy and self-esteem being able to form meaningful relationships.\n
when you do service, you’re more apt when you feel bad for the person (we have food, we feed the hungry-we have homes, you help the homeless). If you have experiences with a certain feeling (if you were homeless, starving, poor) you can have more compassion/empathy towards someone\n

Community service is not only a way to selflessly help someone, I mean, anyone can do it, but sometimes, depending on the reason they’re in jail, prisoners are given a community service job to do to help the community in which they affected, or even ways they can do service in the jail to help make it better.\n
http://www.drc.state.oh.us/web/commserv.htm \njails and correction facilities set out for their inmates to have a “change in heart” to put them in a situation where they have to give back to there communities. in a specific example, a corrections facility gives inmates that are able to act in the community, different jobs to do to be able to help out.\n
There are so many artists, actors, and athletes that are involved in the giving back fund, You Ming, and Jamie-Lynn Sigler among other celebrities. The giving back fund is a place where they are all able to join together and give there donation of money. They’re also given a chance to work with different organizations that some of the money is going to. \n
Those people, the actors, the dancers, the singers, the writers, the athletes, they may not have a ton of time to do things, but they are still able to give back. Donate a toy or a book or clothes, that’s also part of giving back. It may not being getting out there and doing “community service” exactly, but it’s still a way to help and just like that fund, the money can help others do the service with the people the money go towards. \n
teachers and school staff have different feelings toward service learning. from not knowing what it is, to just thinking it’s normal community service, or thinking it’s not an important aspect in schooling is what most think, but them there are some who feel it’s inspiring and a great part of education. \n
Some schools have service learning classes because they feels it’s motivating and gives their students a wider chance to learn from outside the walls of their schools. Certain schools feel it labor, and not good for students to leave and serve their community. The big difference between community service and service learning is that there is school work involved in the learning class. \n
I feel a service learning course should be provided in all high school’s. It gives you opportunity outside the classroom and you’re still able to learn, especially if incorporated in the education system (working with students). It can also broaden your horizon’s to figure out what you want to do in your own future.\n
There are so many partnerships, companies, and organizations working to get service learning classes in all types of schools, in so many different places. \n
Jane Addams (actress) has this quote. It means that being thankful for other people gives them and yourself joy, and also that other people being thankful to you gives you joy, and them too. \n
If we imagine that life is so simple. Than everyone could be happy. Not expecting a huge gesture just to have even a glance of a smile. If everyone could live for the simple things, then a huge gesture could even save someones life. Doing things for other people (community service). “Simplicity is living close to the marrow of life”\n
Charlotte Joko Beck (a teacher of Zen) has the quote saying how life is so simple. If you enjoy the simplest things that you can do for people, and that people can do you you, it would make life itself a simple matter.\n
laughter and happiness increase the behavior to want to do more things selflessly for others \nparticipants watched a funny or serious video clip before playing an altruistic game with strangers. The study revealed that after watching the funny clip subjects who laughed a lot were more likely to give their money to strangers. Further research suggests that this may be due to the effects of laughter on endorphins (naturally produced neurotransmitters that improve people’s mood).\n(giving their money away through a game)\n

meaning to me: many people are hurting and could use help, show grace to them and love or even a SERVICE can help\n
There are so many type of people that need help. From homeless to disease, and poverty to the elderly. There are different needs of all those groups, and so simple to help them and bring them joy!\n

1 out of 3 people that are homeless, are under the age of 18. that means 1/3 of all homeless people are teens and kids! Homeless youth are mostly runaways, and between 1.6-1.7 million people under 18 experience homelessness each year. The majority of runaways are between 15-17 years old, and 3% of youth runaways are under 10 even :/ Since most of the homeless youth are runaways, half of the runaways have been abused.\n
Just in the U.S. there are 50.2 million people, with that including the 17.2 million kids that are food insecure. In 2009, there were 5.6 million household that that needed emergency food packages because they couldn’t afford food. In the world there are 800 million people suffer from chronic hunger, which is a mass food insecurity to the point the people are in famine. \n
Half of the world, about 3 billion people live on less that 2.50 a day. In the world, there are 1.1 billion people that don’t have access to water, and if they do, it’s either not clean or healthy, or it’s not close to them. 1.9 billion kids in there world are also below the poverty line. 640 million of them have no shelter, 400 million of them are without safe water, and 270 million of them are without a health care plan.\n
Love works is mostly where I got my service projects for my application. It’s the service organization at hope community church that provides different services and ways for people to get active in the surrounding communities. \n
Cindy is the Loveworks director at hope, I asked her what she believed about serving and altruism and if she feels an altruistic mind is the reason people serve. I then asker her what she thought of serving and why she serves. \n
Many people can see hope’s future being bright, when I interviewed Cindy she told me she would love for more people to actively participate, and it not be a convenient thing, to something they do regularly. Also, so branch out, and instead of Love Works working with organizations, that it can become one of it’s own.\n
even though it sometimes doesn’t feel like you’re making a difference, don’t give up and still try, because it makes a difference to someone, and that’s the point\n
I’ve been working with Hope’s Love Works to do my service projects. It gives me a chance to work with my friends and peers, and has me working with a wide variety of projects. From raking and cleaning, to moving and delivering mattresses. People can always use help, in even the simplest way. \n
Hope was given hundreds of mattresses to deliver to people who needs beds in Norristown, Bridgeport, King of Prussia, and other surrounding areas. They get a mattress, and boxspring, and possibly a bed frame, too. The mattresses are in a truck in the Hope Church parking lot, and distributed from the in the Love Works truck into people’s homes.\n

My best friend, Kayla, and I raked two houses of leaves. We raked, and had a tractor to cut up the leaves, the pushed them on to blankets and carried them for the leaf truck to pick them up. \n

websites that people are able to find volunteerting to do. \n
I’ve given multiple ways for people to figure out how to get involved. Some may be scared to do it alone, I know I was at first. So do it in groups! \n
For my class activity were making cards for elderly people, they’ll be given to a nursing home and delivered to different people there that are from hope church that are picked up and attend(:\n

Community service is an important part of my life. Making people feel good is something many people enjoy. All you have to do is ask around to find something to do, then do it. Enjoy the time of helping with friends. What can you do to help?\n
