A BRIEF PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY
The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, established as Calcutta
Civil Engineering College, way back in 1856, with the idea of introducing
engineering education in the country, has long and glorious past. In the year 1920, the
college was renamed as Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur. Till 1992, it was a
constituent college of the Calcutta University and has been offering PG Courses in
Engineering since 1954. In recognition of its service to the nation for all theses years,
the college was elevated to the status of a Deemed University in 1992 and the then
Honorable President of India, Dr. Sankar Dayal Sharma formally inaugurated the
University on March 13, 1993. From 1st October 2004, the Institute was further
elevated to the status of a State University and was renamed as Bengal Engineering
and Science University, Shibpur.
The vision of the University is to be one of the best ten excellent engineering and
science universities of the country, committed to transforming India to a developed
nation and partnering in the realization of the Developed India Vision 2020, through
development of world-class engineers and scientists. The university functions as a
research-intensive university whose prime areas of activity are creation of knowledge
and dissemination of knowledge in an environment of research which ensures that

9. POST GRADUATE COURSES:
The University offers 4-semester post graduate courses leading to Master of
Engineering (ME) degree in nine disciplines, namely, Aerospace & Applied
Mechanics, Civil, Computer Science & Technology, Electrical, Mechanical,
Electronics & Tele-Communication, Information Technology, Metallurgy & Material
and Mining Engineering. The department of Architecture, Town and Regional
Planning offers Master of Town & Regional Planning (MTRP) degree. It also
offers Master of Technology (M. Tech) degree from some of its schools in
Materials Engineering, VLSI Design and Mechatronics. The University also offers 6-
semester part time courses
In addition to above, the University also offers the following post-graduate part time
and full time courses:
§ 6-semester part time evening post-graduate course in Civil Engineering in five
areas of specialization namely Structural Engineering, Geo-technical
Engineering and Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering and
Water Resource Engineering.

The University has been approved as a Q.I.P. Centre for Master of Engineering

Ph.D. in Civil Engineering.
In addition to regular Ph.D. programme, the University also offers research facilities
in a wide range of fields of Engineering, Science and Technology through a large
number of R&D projects sponsored by National and International Agencies.
ELIGIBILITY
A.i) The candidates for admission to the fulltime postgraduate courses in
Engineering/Technology/Architecture must possess a Degree in
Engineering/Architecture of this University or any other University/Institution as
recognized by Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur or equivalent to
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture for that purpose. The
candidates whose results in the qualifying examination are yet to be declared but have
succeeded in GATE examination are also eligible to apply subject to the conditions
stated in clause (C) below.
ii) A pass in A.M.I.E. Examinations in particular branch of Engineering/A.M.I.I.M./
A.M.I.E.T.E. Examination with B.Sc. of any recognized University with Physical

10. Science or with Licentiate Engineering Diploma of a recognized institute will be
considered as an equivalent qualification for that branch of Engineering/Technology.
iii) For admission to MTRP programme the following will be considered as an equivalent

GATE qualification OR a regular Post Graduate Degree in M.A./M.Sc. (in

v) For admission to Master of Technology course in VLSI Design, the candidate must

vi) For admission to M.Tech Programme in Mechatronics :
The M.Tech in Mechatronics is a programme being conducted jointly by Bengal
Engineering and Science University, Shibpur and Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research, New Delhi, through its associated Institutes; Central
Electronics Engineering Research Institute, Pilani, Central Scientific Instrument
organization, Chandigarh and Central Mechanical Engineering Research
Institute, Durgapur.
The program will be of two years duration and will be conducted by the
participating Institutes by utilizing their expertise and facilities available. While
the course will be conducted at BESU, CEERI, Pilani, CSIO, Chandigarh and
CMERI, Durgapur, the academic degree will be awarded to students by BESU on
successful completion of the course.
(a) Eligibility: for 18 seats (non-sponsored) qualification required is a valid GATE score
with a minimum 60% marks in
B.E./B.Tech.Mechanical/Production/Manufacturing/Aeronautical/ Electrical/
Electronics/ Telecommunication/ Instrumentation/ Control/ Comp. Sc. & Engg./ IT or
equivalent.
(b) For 5 Sponsored seats : No. of Students : 5: (CSIR+External) with minimum 60%
marks in B.E./B.Tech or equivalent in appropriate discipline.
(c) Admission procedure: as per rules of Bengal Engineering and Science University,
Shibpur.
(d) Reservation norms will be applicable as per the University Rules.
(e) All the academic rules of BESUS (where applicable) will be followed for the
programme.

11. (f) Course structure: subjects will be covered by the BESU and the participating Institutes
of CSIR at CEERI, CSIO and CMERI.
B. As per the directives of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD),
Govt. of India, the following procedure is to be adopted for admission to postgraduate
programmes with Scholarship/Assistantship. The GATE score obtained by the candidate
will be considered for admission. If the candidate is to be selected through written
test/interview for postgraduate programmes, not less than 70% weightage is to be given
for the GATE score and the remaining up to 30% to the marks obtained by the candidate
in his/her qualifying examination or interview.
C. All candidates who are eligible for admission but whose results are yet to be declared, will
be allowed provisional admission, if selected, on production of Course Completion
Certificate from appropriate authorities. They will be required to submit their results of
the qualifying degree examinations by 30.09.2010 failing which their admission may be
treated as cancelled.
D. A limited number of seats in different Departments are available for full-time sponsored
BE/ B.Tech./ B.Arch. candidates; such candidates should submit their application
through the sponsoring authorities. Minimum 2 years experience after Bachelor’s
degree is essential.

i) Candidates who qualified in the GATE in 2009 or earlier will be treated as
Non- GATE Candidates.
ii) The candidates (i) having such professional qualifications must qualify in
the interview, along with Sponsored candidates, arranged by the
concerned Departments.
iii) Admission for Non-GATE sponsored candidates will only be
considered according to the merit, if seats remain vacant in respective
department after admission of GATE candidates.
iv) Those candidates who do not report for Interview at the scheduled time,
date and venue, as mentioned in back side of the front cover page, will not
be eligible for admission in this session. Request for change of time, date
and venue for interview will not be entertained.
v) Certificate for SC/ST: Scheduled caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates in
W.B, as specified in Govt of W.B Order No. 112(2)-TW/EC dated
07.03.91 are eligible for seeking admission under SC/ST Quota. SC/ST
candidates hailing from states other than West Bengal are not eligible for
such benefits and they will be treated as General category candidates.

12. ADMISSION OF SPONSORED CANDIDATES
1. The candidates must have a minimum of two years full time work experience in
a registered firm/company/industry/educational and research institutions/any
Government Department or Government Autonomous organisation in the relevant
field in which admission is made.
2. A certificate from the employer must be furnished, in prescribed proforma,
stating that candidate is being sponsored to get admission. The employer should
also indicate that the candidate will not be withdrawn midway till the
completion of the course.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT
To appear in the final/annual examination each student is required to have at least
75% attendance in each subject.
DISCIPLINE
Students are expected to observe norms of good behavior, rules and regulations
prescribed and orders issued by the university authorities from time to time.
IMPORTANT POINT TO BE NOTED:
If in any particular field of specialization number of students remains less than
five, the university reserves the right not to run that particular programme. In the
event of a particular programme not run by the university, the draft received towards
payment of fee shall be returned to the candidates after closer of the admission
process.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications are to be submitted in prescribed forms available in person from the
University Information Counter, on payment of Rs. 500/- (Rs.550/- in case by post)
by Demand Draft drawn in favour of “Registrar, Bengal Engineering and Science
University, Shibpur” payable at Kolkata, between 10-30 a.m. and 1-30 p.m. on all
working days from 9th April, 2010 onwards. The duly filled in form must reach the

Candidates seeking admission to Master of Engineering / Technology degree course
in more than one department must submit separate application forms along with
the requisite application fee for each case. In such cases, candidates must mention
in each application form, the name of other department where they have also applied
for. However, application can not be submitted for more than two programmes.

13. ADMISSION PROCEDURE AND OTHER DETAILS FOR FULL TIME
COURSES
A department/school-wise list of eligible candidates called for interview, as decided by the
respective department, will be displayed in the university notice board and also in
respective departmental/school notice board on 21st May, 2010 along with venue and time
schedule. The list will also be available in university website.
I. Listed candidates (GATE) are required to appear for interview on 1-2 June, 2010
as per schedule given in the back side of the front cover page. Sponsored candidates
will have to appear for a test followed by the interview on the same date.
II. A department/school-wise merit list of candidates will be made for both 'General
(Non-sponsored)' and SC/ST/PH categories on the basis of 70% weightage for the
GATE score and 30% weightage for performance in interview. Merit list for
sponsored candidates will be made on the basis of 70% weightage on the results of
selection test, and 30% weightage the performance in interview.
Department/school-wise merit lists for candidates eligible for counselling will be
displayed on the university notice board and also in respective departmental notice
board on 7th June, 2010. Merit list will also be available in the University website.
If the result of final examination is not published at the time of interview, selection
shall be made on the results of previous semester /part of qualifying examinations.
III. Those candidates, belonging to either GATE or Sponsored categories, who fail to
report for interview will not be eligible for admission.
IV. The counselling of the merit-listed GATE candidates and that of Sponsored
candidates will he held on 15th June, 2010.
V. On receipt of offer letter for admission from the respective Head of the
Department, the candidate will have to report for admission to the respective
courses to the Registrar, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur on
15-17 June, 2010 between 10-30 a.m. to 1-30 p.m. and 2-30 p.m. to 5-00 p.m. with
the following documents:
(a) Offer letter issued by respective department
(b) Original mark sheets of all semester / part examinations and certificates
(c) Three copies of stamp size photograph
(d) Medical certificate along with the Blood Group
(e) The GATE score card (original), where applicable
(f) Demand Draft/ Pay Order for the amount as stated in item VIII below.
(g ) Migration certificate issued by the university from which the candidate has
come (see item X) .
VI. A 2nd list of Candidate(s), if necessary, will be made for GATE and Sponsored
Candidates and will be displayed in respective departments on 16th July, 2010.
Counselling and Admission of candidates in 2nd Merit list will be held on 20th July,
2010.
On receipt of offer for admission, the candidates will have to report to the Registrar with
documents as mentioned in item V above.

15. X. The admission of students migrating from other Universities is provisional
and subject to approval of the Universities, from which they come.
XI. The dates of admission (for candidates offered admission as per 1st counseling
call) are June 15-17, 2010 from 10-30 a.m. to 1-30 p.m. and from 2-30 pm to 5-

XII. The session will commence on and from 26th July, 2010. The students admitted
must report to the respective Head of the department along with the Provisional
Admission Certificate issued by the Registrar. Regarding class routine the

counselling call) is July 20, 2010 from 10-30 a.m. to 1-30 p.m. and from 2-30

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE : Only GATE qualified candidates are eligible
