"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

AT&T 4G LTE EXPANDS IN NEWARK AND HEATH
More customers to benefit from nation’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network
on the latest devices
NEWARK, Ohio (Aug. 7, 2013) —AT&T* has expanded the nation’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE
network** in Newark, bringing more customers the latest generation of wireless network technology.
AT&T launched 4G LTE in Columbus on November 16, and the expanded coverage is part of its
ongoing rollout across the market. AT&T 4G LTE coverage now includes parts of Licking County, such
as Newark, Heath and Johnstown.
“"With information, news, and business moving at a faster pace every day, it's important for our region's
economic development that the newest and best technology is available to our businesses and
residents," said State Senator Tim Schaffer. “I'm proud to have AT&T as a partner in this region as we
build better infrastructure and bring the most updated mobile technology to our part of Ohio."
Watch here to see several of the benefits AT&T 4G LTE provides, including:
Faster speeds. LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times
faster than 3G***. Customers can stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before.
Reliability. AT&T not only has the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network, but now also has the most
reliable 4G LTE network. According to independent third-party data, AT&T has the highest
success rate for delivering mobile content across nationwide 4G LTE networks.
Cool new devices. AT&T offers several LTE-compatible devices, including new AT&T 4G LTE
smartphones and tablets.
2. Faster response time. LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to
move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file
once you’ve sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-
way video calling and telemedicine.
More efficient use of spectrum. Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses
spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and
services and to deliver a better network experience.
“In an information-driven economy, the ability for all the people of our community to have access to the
latest communications technology is critical,” said State Representative Jay Hottinger. “Investments like
this assure that businesses of all sizes can compete effectively in a global economy. I would like to
thank AT&T for this investment in our community.”
AT&T’s 4G Network
AT&T’s innovation and investment have resulted in a nationwide 4G network with ultra-fast speeds and
a more consistent user experience.
“I’m proud to say that Newark and Heath are among the communities enjoying this cutting-edge
technology,” said Licking County Chamber of Commerce President Cheri Hottinger. “AT&T’s
investment is an example of the company’s overall commitment to Ohio, and builds on our reputation
as a strong state for business investment.”
“Bringing 4G LTE to the Newark and Heath areas gives our customers here the same advantages of
high speed wireless access that are enjoyed in our larger metropolitan areas, “ said AT&T External
Affairs Director David Kandel. “As today’s expansion shows, we’re continuing our rollout of fast 4G LTE
speeds to more areas of Ohio.”
The great performance of AT&T’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network continues to be validated
by independent third-party testing:
3. Our 4G LTE service was recognized as having faster average download and upload speeds
than any of our competitors in PCWorld/TechHive’s most recent 20-market speed tests — the
second consecutive year that AT&T has ranked first overall. PCWorld/TechHive also ranked
AT&T’s as the fastest combination of 3G and 4G services in the 20 cities it tested.****
And AT&T was named America’s fastest 4G LTE network in PC Magazine’s 2013 Fastest
Mobile Networks 30-market study — and also swept the top rankings in all six U.S. regions from
coast to coast: Northeast, Southeast, North-Central, South-Central, Northwest and
Southwest.*****
Even as AT&T continues to expand its 4G LTE coverage, customers can get 4G speeds outside of 4G
LTE areas on our 4G HSPA+ network, unlike some competitors, where smartphone customers may fall
back to slower 3G technologies when outside of LTE coverage.
AT&T’s focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond 4G to embrace
additional connection technologies. AT&T operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network****** including
more than 32,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and
provides access to more than 402,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T
smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi
usage doesn’t count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.
AT&T also is a leading developer of Distributed Antenna Systems, which utilize multiple small antennas
to maximize coverage and speed within stadiums, convention centers, office buildings, hotels and other
areas where traditional coverage methods are challenging.
Over the past five years, AT&T invested nearly $98 billion into its wireless and wireline networks across
the country. Since 2008, AT&T has invested more capital into the U.S. economy than any other public
company. In a July 2012 report, the Progressive Policy Institute ranked AT&T No. 1 on its list of U.S.
“Investment Heroes.”
