Final Girl The person who usually survives in slasher movies is the sexually inactive girl. As we can see here, she usually has darker hair and is a bit masculine. This is essentially trying to send across a message of sex being a dangerous thing.
Monster The monster in Slasher movies has usually got a mask on. This makes it scarier for the audience as it could be anyone underneath the mask which adds to the creepiness.
Group of Friends Slasher movies usually involve a group of friends who are not under any parental control. This is usually when the monster attacks.
Benefactor All Slasher movies involve a benefactor. This is usually an older person who randomly appears throughout the movie such as a police man or a doctor. This convention has been broken in ‘Scream’ as the benefactor is young. The benefactor always seems to have commited the killings and we usually find out at the end that they haven’t.
Sexually active girl The person who usually dies first is a blonde girl who is sexually active as she is the vulnerable person. This is due to the religious values the Slasher movies portray; sex before marriage is wrong. Also the monster is shows as the ‘devil’
Location Slasher movies have two main locations. These are suburban areas or woodlands. Having the location as a suburb shows to the audience that its an area just like the one they live in, making it scarier for them.

Film Noir Film noir was created by French critics who noticed how black and dark look. They created black and white films which portrayed the coldness, fear and paranoia as well as the criminal, violent and greedy values shown in crime/gangster movies which reflected the post war society values.
Gothic Horror Gothic Horror refers to very gloomy and mysterious types of horror movies. They usually include some sort of paranormal or supernatural powers such as ghosts or haunted houses.
Modern Horror One of the major changes in horror films was the change from, good vs. evil style of film, to a more confusing and morally ambiguous story, which was more challenging for the audience. It also had much less happy endings. It changed from spooky locations to locations familiar to the audience
