The document summarizes education in Spain during the liberal period from 1833-1843. It was a time of civil war between supporters of Queen Isabella II and her opponents led by Carlos Maria Isidoro. Liberals depended on Maria Cristina's regency and enacted policies like confiscating church lands. Secondary education under the Duke of Rivas' plan aimed to prepare an elite for university instead of being universally accessible. From 1843-1854 under the moderates, education aimed to find balance between liberalism and traditionalism and defend property ownership over equality.
The Economic Value of Liberal EducationRobert Kelly
There is increasing demand from employers for college graduates with higher-level skills such as critical thinking, complex problem solving, and communication skills. As the global economy becomes more knowledge-based, employers require workers who can drive innovation. Recent surveys find that over 90% of employers prioritize these types of skills over a candidate's specific major. However, the supply of college-educated workers with these skills is not keeping pace with demand. Liberal arts education aims to develop broad intellectual skills and has been shown to lead to higher earning potential. Studies find the highest salaries are in jobs requiring skills like writing, reasoning, creativity, and social skills - core areas of liberal education.
This document lists and briefly describes several notable Indian historical figures who achieved great things. It highlights their accomplishments, such as Aryabhatta who taught the world mathematics 1500 years ago, Sushrutha who invented surgery without formal medical training, Jagdish Bose who invented wireless communication, and Mohandas Gandhi who led India to independence through nonviolence without weapons. The document encourages the reader to take pride in these Indian heroes and to strive to become a hero themselves as a tribute to India. It emphasizes that confidence is more important than money, so one should never lose confidence.
The document summarizes the loss of Spain's colonies in the Americas and Asia at the end of the 19th century. It describes the Spanish colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, the growing independence movements in each, and their ultimate loss to the United States in the Spanish-American War of 1898. It also provides brief overviews of the demographic situations and cultures that developed in each colony in the late 19th century period prior to their independence.
Microphotography is photography taken through a microscope or similar device to magnify small objects. John B. Dancer first used microphotography in 1839 at a magnification ratio of 160:1, though it was initially seen as trivial. In the 20th century, microphotography split into two areas - art and science. The document provides examples of objects that have been photographed microscopically, such as carrots, soap films, snowflakes, and cotton fibers.
The document proposes a category vector space approach for multi-class classification problems. It discusses limitations of combining binary classifiers and motivates mapping categories to a geometric vector space to maximize margins. It outlines solving classification and regression in this category space using support vector machines with kernels to project vectors between spaces. Preliminary results apply this to a 3-class face recognition problem using a Gaussian radial basis function classifier.

Liberal Education & Civic Capacity: We Are Only Half-Way ThereRobert Kelly
This document summarizes research on students' civic learning in college. It finds that according to a national survey, less than half of students reported gains in understanding people from other backgrounds, developing personal values and ethics, contributing to their community, or participating in community projects related to courses. Additionally, the percentage of students who agreed their campus helped them expand awareness of civic involvement declined each year of college. However, the percentage who agreed their ability to consider diverse perspectives increased with time in college. The document concludes that while many students develop civic skills, too many do not, and more work is needed by educational institutions to prepare students for civic participation and a democratic society.
The document provides historical context on the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic from 1931-1939. It discusses key events like the proclamation of the republic, the 1931 constitution that established Spain as a secular state, and symbols of the new republic like the flag and national anthem. It also summarizes the Republican-Azañista biennium from 1931-1933 when important reforms were passed regarding agrarian reform, labor laws, the military, religion, and autonomy for Catalonia. Overall, the document outlines the major political, economic, and social developments during the Second Spanish Republic.
Liberal Education: Our Students' Best Preparation for Work and Citizenship – ...Robert Kelly
This document discusses the importance of liberal education for preparing students for work and citizenship in the 21st century. It argues that liberal education outcomes like critical thinking, communication skills, and ethical reasoning are valued by employers and important for civic engagement. While liberal education can provide these benefits, not all students currently receive such an education, with some being steered away from broad arts and sciences courses. Overall, the document makes the case that liberal education is essential for both individual and societal success in today's world.
1) Isabel of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon united their kingdoms through marriage in 1469, forming the basis for a unified Spanish state.
2) They pursued religious and political unity, expelling Jews in 1492, conquering Granada from the Moors, and incorporating Navarre and other territories.
3) Their expansion led to the colonization of the Americas beginning in 1492 with Columbus' voyage, while maintaining control in the Mediterranean through alliances and military campaigns.
The Arabs on the Iberian Peninsula from 711-1492 CE saw:
1. The initial conquest by Muslim armies which established independent emirates and caliphates that flourished for several centuries, reaching a golden age under the Caliphate of Córdoba.
2. The fragmentation of al-Andalus into competing Taifa kingdoms from the 11th-13th centuries as Christian kingdoms advanced, until temporary political unifications by the Almoravids and Almohads.
3. The eventual fall of Muslim rule to the Catholic Monarchs with the conquest of Granada in 1492, ending over 700 years of Arab presence on the Iberian Peninsula

2015 Annual Meeting: Liberal Education, Global Flourishing, and the Equity Imperative
How does the emerging digital environment shape the life cycle of students’ signature work in the 21st century? Digital technology has changed the learning ecosystem, and the future of liberal education depends upon an integrative vision of learning that is not merely advanced by digital tools, but reshaped in the same ways that digital learning has already fundamentally changed our culture. In this forum, we will explore what a synthesis of liberal education and connected learning can look like through the lens of signature work and the possibilities that the digital opens up at each stage of this work.

The Economic Case for Liberal EducationRobert Kelly
There is increasing demand from employers for college graduates with higher levels of learning and skills beyond just knowledge in a specific field, including skills like critical thinking, complex problem solving, communication and collaboration. Employers prioritize hiring candidates who can contribute to innovation in the workplace through these types of skills. Data also shows higher earnings potential and career success for those with broader skillsets associated with a liberal education, including skills like writing, reasoning and social/interpersonal skills. A liberal education approach to college that combines broad and field-specific knowledge with the development of transferable skills is recommended.
Liberal education aims to develop students' character and skills for the 21st century. It was previously seen as non-vocational but is now essential for success in a global economy. Liberal education outcomes include knowledge of human culture and science, intellectual and practical skills, and social responsibility. It is delivered through cornerstone projects, entrepreneurship courses, research projects, and capstone projects. Strengthening liberal education at UKM includes increasing credits required and encouraging more problem-based and collaborative learning across concentrations and with other universities.
This document discusses the history and principles of liberalism and liberal education. It explores the origins of liberal values in reaction to traditional state domination and the emphasis on the individual starting with thinkers like Locke, Mill, and Kant. The key values of liberalism are described as individual freedom, equality, and rationality. However, tensions exist between these values that liberal education must seek to resolve. The document also examines alternative frameworks for understanding the relationship between these central liberal values and their implications for education.
The document summarizes key aspects of modern philosophy between the 17th and 20th centuries. It discusses how modern philosophy centered on subjectivity, critique, and a teleological view of progress. Their works, including Hobbes' Leviathan and Locke's Two Treatises of Government, explored the social contract and forms of government. Montesquieu advocated for separation of powers. The document also covers humanism, the Renaissance, and Enlightenment as influential periods in the emergence of modern thought.
This document summarizes key modern philosophers and their contributions to epistemology. It discusses rationalists like Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz, and empiricists like Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. It focuses on Descartes' method of doubt and criterion of truth, Hume's views that all knowledge comes from experience and his skepticism of concepts like God and causality, and Kant's synthesis of rationalism and empiricism.
