Brianna Totty
Honors 9 lit
Compare and Contrast Feudal Japan vs. Greek
Greeks or Japanese?
Pure inspiration is a hard thing to come by, everyone has been influenced by someone or something and that source of inspiration has been influenced by another source and so on. Each civilization has been influenced by its ancestors that either made it better, or caused it to fall because it could not reach its ancestors expectations. The Greeks are a good example about inspiration among later cultures such as the Romans and Western Europe, but what about a small nation like Feudal Japan, have the Greeks influenced this Asian country? The truth is that even Feudal Japan and the ancient Greeks share similarities because they have the same basic background their ancestors gave them like government, religion and art however, they are individualized from their far reaches from each other because of land and water.
In Ancient Greece status was a big part in government, they had their Nobles and Kings, warriors, citizens who had to be males, and peasants or slaves. In Feudal Japan, they had almost the same status; they had the Emperor and Shoguns, Daimyo, Samurais and Peasants. In both cultures, the noble classes made up a small amount of the population while the peasants and slaves made up the larger population. They also shared similarities about how even though there was a big man on top smaller city-states were ruled by a group of people, in Japan this high ranking person was called a Shogun and many times periods were named after a very powerful Shogun. A difference between the two cultures is that in Feudal Japan, a woman of high ranking can give order to any man or female below her by not a man of her status or higher while in Ancient Greece’s woman did not have the “mental capacity” to do anything but stay home and take care of the children. The people were taught that they would be living like this for their lives, that unless you were a woman you would stick to your status because it was destiny; your fate was decided by the gods above.
Religion is important in many cultures, it helps with the fact that people are mortal and will die soon but it also answers some type of question life offers like who created the earth. In Feudal Japan there were many religions but the two large religions were Shinto and Buddhism, in ancient Greece however there was one religion with many different gods and goddesses with different powers. Shinto is about nature, they have gods and goddesses but it is really about how the trees and flowers having little spirits of ancestors inside of them watching over you, while in Ancient Greece gods and goddesses often took favor to certain humans and caused despair because they were jealous or just bored. Feudal Japan and Ancient Greece do not share similarities in religion but they did share one thing, they shared the fact that they had religion to look for when they had no answers about life so when they discovered art they made sculptures and painting of their godly answers.
Inspiration is easy to come around to, everything in this world is inspired by something else but the hardest thing is to make it into your own ideas. Ancient civilizations all share the same thing, the Ancient Greeks and Feudal Japanese share many traits but they are also different in how these traits are practiced.
