FEDERAL ROYAL COMMISSION INTO
POWER PRICES NEEDED
Wednesday 7 August 2013
FAMILY FIRST MLC Robert Brokenshire has this morning called upon the Prime
Minister, Opposition leader and written this morning to the South Australian Premier
asking him to support his call for a Royal Commission into power prices regardless of
who wins the Federal election on September 7.
“A recent report published by the Australian Energy Regulator into abnormally high
spot prices this autumn – setting records not seen even in recent South Australian
summers – suggests serious problems with the relatively recent national market”, Mr
Brokenshire said.
“This is a state legislative matter, and South Australia is the lead legislator – other
states are looking to adopt the national legislation that has passed the SA
Parliament”
“However, the SA Energy Minister told Adelaide radio this morning he had tried to
reform the market through the council of energy ministers, without success – so there
is not going to be any improvement in the sky-rocketing power bills without a Royal
Commission”
“I’m here to warn the rest of the nation, out of the state with the highest electricity bills
in the nation, whilst Australia has the highest power prices on earth, that the rest of
Australia is going to cop it like South Australia has been, once they sign on to the
national market”
“The regulator has no teeth and the energy companies have guaranteed profits. No
other industry in the world has such a regime that ensures companies can keep
growing their profits, and even pass through unexpected costs that any other
business just has to carry”
“The national energy rules favour the power companies, not the consumers, and if
we don’t have a Royal Commission to straighten it out, the single biggest cost of
living pressure in the nation is going to get a lot worse”
