We are officially at the mid-point of the year, and the labor market is still holding up strong. In June 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics added 213,000 jobs, beating economists projections of 195,000 jobs. The Bureau also reported revised job gains for April and May of this year. April's gains increased from 159,000 added jobs to 175,000 jobs and May's jobs improved from 223,000 jobs added to 244,000. This is a net increase of 37,000 jobs for April and May combined. Over the past three months, job gains avered a whopping 211,000 jobs.

The number of unfilled positions in accommodation and food services declined by 12,300 (-11.1%) to 98,100 in May, the largest proportional decline of any sector. The decline in May followed a cumulative decrease of 9,800 (-8.1%) in February, March and April. The job vacancy rate in the sector was 7.0% in May, down from 7.8% in April. Despite this decrease, the job vacancy rate in this sector remained the highest across all sectors in May.
Job vacancies decrease in health care and social assistance
In the health care and social assistance sector, the number of vacant positions decreased by 12,500 (-8.5%) to 134,500 in May, following little change in March and April. Over the six-month period preceding May, the number of vacancies in the sector ranged from 137,200 in November 2022 to 151,200 in January 2023, while payroll employment has increased by 30,600 (+1.4%) since November 2022.
Retail trade records the lowest number of vacancies since April 2021
There were 78,700 job vacancies in retail trade in May, down by 6,900 (-8.0%) from April and by 30,700 (-28.1%) from May 2022. The number of unfilled positions in the sector in May 2023 was the lowest since April 2021 (77,500). The job vacancy rate in retail trade was 3.8% in May 2023, down by 0.3 percentage points from the previous month and by 1.4 percentage points from May 2022. The year-over-year drop in the job vacancy rate in May 2023 was entirely led by the fall in job vacancies (-6,900; -8.0%), as payroll employment (2,010,800) in the sector was little changed over this period.
Job vacancies up in manufacturing for the first time since September 2022
In manufacturing, the number of unfilled positions increased (+3,700, +6.7%) to 59,000 in May. This increase followed a cumulative decrease of 25,700 (-31.8%) from September 2022 to April 2023.
The number of vacancies rose in two other sectors in May: finance and insurance (+3,000 to 29,900) and management of companies and enterprises (+1,000 to 3,600).

Largest proportional decline in vacancies in accommodation and food services
The number of unfilled positions in accommodation and food services declined by 12,300 (-11.1%) to 98,100 in May, the largest proportional decline of any sector. The decline in May followed a cumulative decrease of 9,800 (-8.1%) in February, March and April. The job vacancy rate in the sector was 7.0% in May, down from 7.8% in April. Despite this decrease, the job vacancy rate in this sector remained the highest across all sectors in May.
Job vacancies decrease in health care and social assistance
In the health care and social assistance sector, the number of vacant positions decreased by 12,500 (-8.5%) to 134,500 in May, following little change in March and April. Over the six-month period preceding May, the number of vacancies in the sector ranged from 137,200 in November 2022 to 151,200 in January 2023, while payroll employment has increased by 30,600 (+1.4%) since November 2022.
Retail trade records the lowest number of vacancies since April 2021
There were 78,700 job vacancies in retail trade in May, down by 6,900 (-8.0%) from April and by 30,700 (-28.1%) from May 2022. The number of unfilled positions in the sector in May 2023 was the lowest since April 2021 (77,500). The job vacancy rate in retail trade was 3.8% in May 2023, down by 0.3 percentage points from the previous month and by 1.4 percentage points from May 2022. The year-over-year drop in the job vacancy rate in May 2023 was entirely led by the fall in job vacancies (-6,900; -8.0%), as payroll employment (2,010,800) in the sector was little changed over this period.
Job vacancies up in manufacturing for the first time since September 2022
In manufacturing, the number of unfilled positions increased (+3,700, +6.7%) to 59,000 in May. This increase followed a cumulative decrease of 25,700 (-31.8%) from September 2022 to April 2023.
The number of vacancies rose in two other sectors in May: finance and insurance (+3,000 to 29,900) and management of companies and enterprises (+1,000 to 3,600).

ICT Trends Article March 2016: Contrasts in Demand
1. Demand for ICT jobs in New Zealand has seen a slight downturn in early 2016, decreasing 7% year-on-year according to Seek job listings, while Australia has experienced 10% growth.
2. The skills shortage in Australia has led to international workers filling the majority of new ICT roles, with 23,000 added in the past year, as few as 3,000 were filled domestically.
3. Gender diversity in the technology sector remains an issue globally, with women making up only about 19% of software developers and engineers according to a survey of 84 companies. Initiatives in various countries aim to increase the number of women in technical fields.
July 2018 Jobs Report
The July 2018 jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that 157,000 jobs were created in July, below economists' expectations of 190,000. The unemployment rate remained at 3.9% while average hourly earnings increased 2.7%. Major job gains occurred in professional and business services which increased by 51,000 jobs, manufacturing which increased by 37,000 jobs, and healthcare and social assistance which increased by 34,000 jobs. Employment in other industries such as mining, wholesale trade, and government showed little change.

CompTIA projects global industry growth of 4.1 percent in 2017. The IT Industry Outlook 2017 identifies 12 trends – in technology, workforce and the IT channel – likely to impact the industry this year.

Employment was up by 32,000 in wholesale and retail trade in April, driven by increases in Quebec and Alberta. Compared with 12 months earlier, employment in this industry grew by 75,000 (+2.7%), entirely due to gains since the beginning of 2019.
Following four months of little change, employment in construction increased by 29,000 in April. Gains were concentrated in Ontario and British Columbia. On a year-over-year basis, employment in this industry was up by 32,000 (+2.2%).
There were 14,000 more people working in information, culture and recreation, entirely due to increases in Ontario. Compared with 12 months earlier, employment in this industry was little changed.
In "other services," employment rose by 14,000 in April. This industry includes repair and maintenance; services related to civic and professional organizations; and personal and laundry services. Increases were concentrated in Quebec and Alberta. On a year-over-year basis, employment in this industry grew by 28,000 (+3.5%).
Employment in public administration increased by 9,000 in April, entirely due to more people working in this industry in Quebec. On a year-over-year basis, employment grew by 41,000 (+4.2%) at the national level, driven by gains since the beginning of 2019.
In agriculture, employment rose by 7,000 in April. On a year-over-year basis, employment in this industry was little changed.
Employment decreased by 15,000 in professional, scientific and technical services, mostly in Quebec. Nationally, this was the first monthly decline since August 2018. Despite the decrease in the month, employment in this industry grew by 63,000 (+4.3%) on a year-over-year basis.

The August 2013 jobs report showed mixed results. While 169,000 jobs were added and the unemployment rate fell slightly to 7.3%, the civilian labor force declined by 312,000. Some economists believe this caused the drop in unemployment. Private sector jobs increased by 152,000 led by gains in professional and business services and temporary help services, but overall job growth was lower than expected. The government also reported a surprise gain of 17,000 public sector jobs.

The Macro Backdrop for NYC Commercial Office Space
- Office employment growth in New York City has slowed to 0.6% annually through August 2018 compared to 1.9% the previous year. Employment growth in the finance and information sectors has declined.
- Manhattan has seen steadier office employment growth of around 3% annually even as the number of office establishments has peaked. The technology sector remains the bright spot for job growth.
- Consumer price inflation in the New York region is lower than the national average at 2.2% due to more modest growth in housing costs. Home price appreciation in the New York metro area also remains well below other major cities.
UK IT Employment Snapshot Q3 2016
There were more than 350,000 core information technology (IT) job postings in the UK during 2016 Q3 according to Burning Glass Technologies Labour Insights.
In comparison to the entire UK job market, there were over 2.4 million total postings for the same 2016 Q3 period. IT postings represent 15% of all job postings in Q3.
IT postings have increased by 11% over the same Q3 last year. Note: not all postings translate to a hire. (See “About This Snapshot” on last page.)
According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK unemployment rate declined to 4.8% for the 3-month period ending October 2016 (slightly down from 4.9% the previous 3 months). This is the lowest unemployment rate since July to September 2015.
There were 31.76m people in employment between August and October (up by over 340,000 a year earlier), vs. 1.62m unemployed people looking for work (103,000 fewer than the year earlier).

Average weekly earnings, derived by dividing total weekly earnings by the total number of payroll employees, were $1,170 in March, up 0.9% compared with February. On a year-over-year basis, average weekly earnings increased 4.3% in March, while the Consumer Price Index increased 6.7% during the same period. The March year-over-year increase (+4.3%) was more than double the year-over-year increase observed in February (+2.1%) and January (+2.1%). In general, changes in average weekly earnings can be the result of a number of factors, including wage growth, and special payments such as bonuses, changes in the composition of employment and average hours worked per week.
Overall job vacancies reach all-time high
Across all sectors, Canadian employers were actively seeking to fill more than one million (1,012,900) vacant positions at the beginning of March 2022, a record high. Vacancies increased by 22.6% (+186,400) in the month and were up 60.5% (+382,000) from March 2021 (not seasonally adjusted).
The job vacancy rate, which measures the number of vacant positions as a proportion of all positions (vacant and filled), was 5.9% in March 2022, matching the record high observed in September 2021 (not seasonally adjusted).
Vacancies increase by more than one-third in both accommodation and food services and retail trade
In the accommodation and food services sector, the number of vacancies rose 37.2% (+42,900) in March 2022. Following this increase, employers were seeking to fill a total of 158,100 positions. The job vacancy rate was 12.8%, the highest across all sectors for the 11th consecutive month (not seasonally adjusted).
There were 109,200 job vacancies in retail trade in March, up 37.2% (+29,600) from February. Following this increase, vacancies in the sector were 40.7% (+31,600) higher than in March 2021 (not seasonally adjusted).
