Father's Day originated in 1909 when Sonora Smart Dodd suggested the holiday after hearing a Mother's Day sermon, as she wanted to honor her father who had raised her and her siblings alone after their mother died. Father's Day is now a national holiday celebrated across the United States each year in June to recognize fathers and father figures, having been declared an official holiday by President Nixon in 1972.
