A few of your friends at Responsory have picked their favorite vintage Father's Day ads. As a bonus, each of us have shared a photo or two that give you a glimpse of our own fond Father's Day memories.

2. Ad Pick by Lisa Robbins
An ad with fishing, tools or cars would probably be even more
appropriate to represent my dad. In more recent years though,
he always dressed well and since I often bought dad shirts for
father’s day I picked this one. Bonus...it looks a lot like dad in his
younger years!

3. Ad Pick by Rob Trecek
I picked the advertisement for the 1970s Oldsmobile station wagon because it reminded me of our
family vacation to Florida we took in 1977. My dad was the only driver and spent two straight 16 hour
days behind the wheel with 5 impatient kids in the back! The first night we stayed in Chattanooga at a
Days Inn. We had two rooms reserved but the manager had bad news for us when we checked in. One
of the air conditioning units were out in one of the rooms. Of course it was 80 degrees with matching
humidity. My dad and mom took the room without air! I learned what it meant to sacrifice for your kids
at the age of 12. One of many lessons my dad would teach me over the years and continues to teach me
to this very day!

4. Ad Pick by Denise Hearden
What strikes me most is that most of us would NEVER condone the unhealthy habit of smoking of a pipe
or cigarettes by our beloved fathers or grandfathers today. But back in the day, a new pipe and cherry
tobacco made a great Father’s Day gift! I have a lot of memories of sitting on my Dad’s lap or stacking
wood in the yard or watching him plow the driveway while puffing away with a pipe clenched in his
teeth. He even had a corn cob pipe my brother and I would pretend to smoke. Boy, how things have
changed!

I chose this ad because I like bourbon. When I think of sipping it, I am reminded of the importance of
taking time to sit back and relax once in a while.

6. Ad Pick by Ana Devcic
This ad instantly reminded me of my dad because he loves to sail. Also perfectly represents my idea
of “sailing,” (and by this I mean relaxing on deck and enjoying the sunshine while my dad does all the
work!)

7. Ad Pick by Becky Behrendt
The smell of Old Spice cologne will always remind me of my dad. He wore
it when I was growing up and, to this day, whenever I get a whiff of it I’m
instantly transported to being a little girl on his lap - safe, secure and loved.

I feel like this ad sums up my Grandpa’s perfect day. Pajamas and golf.

How could you not enjoy this mail order ad. All the years I have been an
artists I never had a sexy pin up girl show up while I am doing art studies.

Chocolate, cashews, beer. That sums up every father’s day (and birthday and Christmas) gift I have
ever given to my Dad and probably ever will. Every year he’s just as excited and happy as the last.
