The Fulbright Taiwan program promotes educational exchange between Taiwan and the United States to foster cooperation and understanding. It has supported exchanges in engineering, science, economics and later social sciences and humanities. Many leaders of social movements in Taiwan are Fulbright alumni. Recently, the program has emphasized culture and the arts. The Fulbright Taiwan program has sent over 1000 Taiwanese grantees to the U.S. and welcomed more than 700 American grantees to Taiwan. In 2005-2006, grants supported 15 American lecturers/researchers and 23 students to come to Taiwan, and 25 Taiwanese researchers, 17 students and 3 professionals to go to the U.S.
