Talaq is an Arabic word meaning "to release" and refers to repudiation of marriage by the husband under Muslim law. There are different forms of talaq under Muslim personal law, including talaq-ul-sunnat (divided into ahsan and hasan) and talaq-ul-biddat or "triple talaq" which makes the divorce irrevocable immediately. Several court cases found triple talaq to be unconstitutional as it violates women's right to dignity and equality under Articles 14 and 21 of the Indian constitution. While Muslim personal laws govern marriage and divorce, there are calls for a Uniform Civil Code to create single laws for all citizens and strengthen national unity.
