This document contains a family contract between a parent/guardian and their adolescent/teenager. The teenager agrees to avoid risky behaviors like drugs and alcohol, make good decisions, communicate openly with their parent, and introduce them to friends. The parent agrees to be available to talk, keep conversations private, not overreact, and provide transportation if needed without anger. Both agree the teenager will stay drug and alcohol free and the parent will help the teenager grow into a successful adult.

1. Family Contract
Adolescent or Teenager
I understand that each day I will have decisions to make, some of which could potentially affect
my life in a very negative way. I promise that I will practice good decision-making skills. I will
avoid making bad decisions that could potentially jeopardize my safety, future, and your trust in
me. I will do my best to communicate with you frequently about issues that are important to us
both.
I understand the extreme risksthat are associated with the use of drugs and alcohol. I pledge to
stay drug and alcohol free while I live in your house. I understand that you may conduct random
drug tests at any time, and that in doing so you are only looking out for my best interest. It does
not mean you do not trust me or that I am being punished. On the contrary, it is a part of
growing up (I will be drug tested as an adult in order to gain and keep employment) and a way
of earning your trust.
My life and my future are important to me. I will never drive under the influence; I will never ride
in a vehicle with a driver who is impaired. I agree that I will call you if I am ever in a situation that
is threatening to my safety (such as needing a sober driver). I also agree that I will call if I get
into a bad situation that I cannot get out of on my own.
I will introduce you to all of my friends. I understand that my friends are a reflection of me. We
have a great deal in common and enjoy many of the same things. This is what makes us
friends. We have an enormous effect on one another. If my friends are using drugs, it is not
good for our friendship, my reputation, or my relationship with you. For these reasons, I will not
remain friends with anyone that does drugs.
I will always let you know whom I am with and where we will be going. I will phone or text you
immediately if those plans change in any way, no matter what the reason may be.
Lastly, I understand that you love me and only want the best for me. I promise to remain drug
free so that I can meet my full potential in life.

2. Parent, Grandparent, or Guardian
I understand how hard being a teenager can be. I promise that I will always do everything I can
to understand you and to help you navigate the many challenging decisions you will faceduring
these difficult years.
I will make myself available to talk about anything in which you need to discuss. I will never
judge you nor will I ever think any less of you. I also promise to keep our private conversations
between us.
I will always encourage open and honest communication. I promise that I will never get angry or
over react when you come to me to discuss difficult topics. This includes situations in which you
used drugs or drank. I will respect your courage and honesty. However, I am still your parent
and my actions following our conversation are in your best interest.
Additionally, I will provide you with transportation home if you are ever in a situation where you
do not have a sober driver or you feel unsafe. I promise thatI will not be angry and I will remain
calm at all times during and after the ride home. I will assure you that you did the right thing and
that I am proud of you for making a responsible decision in calling me for a ride.
I am responsible for your health and safety. It is my job to help ensure you grow into a welladjusted, healthy, and successful adult. For this reason, I will do everything within my power to
protect you from danger. That includes substance abuse.
