Curtis combined aspects of the de Laval and Parsons turbine designs by using fixed nozzles on the first stage and then alternating fixed and rotating blade rows like the Parsons, but with fewer stages, typically up to ten compared to up to a hundred for Parsons. The Curtis design had lower overall efficiency than either the Parsons or de Laval designs.
