Fairtrade is a business model that aims to help cocoa farmers by ensuring they receive a fair price for their cocoa and work in better conditions. Cocoa is mainly grown in Ghana, Indonesia, and Nigeria, and consumed the most in Ireland, Switzerland, and Great Britain. Fairtrade provides cocoa farmers long-term contracts, prevents child labor, and reduces health risks, as traditional cocoa farming offers no long-term security and forces many farmers into poverty and debt due to the high costs of equipment, food, and medicine needed. Farmers are encouraged to join cooperatives for more bargaining power with buyers.
