Losing weight and keeping
it off can’t be done over a
number of days. You need
to make permanent daily
changes to your life.
• Exercise daily – take the
stairs, walk etc.
• Trim the fat off meat.
• Eat 5 fruit and veg a day.
• Don’t skip breakfast!!! - One students and staff a like often
forget!
• Reduce alcohol intake.
• Low fat options.
Images of wafer thin women and well chiselled men are seen everywhere in todays media, so it’s no wonder that we are a culture obsessed with diets. It’s not uncommon to open a magazine and find the latest fad diet being promoted by some celebrity. However although the diets are mostly aimed at women, men also are falling into the grip of fad diets. They are not like crash diets. Crash diets are calorie reduced diets meant to help you loss 5 – 7 lbs within a couple of days, while fad diets last longer than just a few days. They very rarely give good results.
We all (perhaps) know that fab dieting in some way is bad for us, but do we know the actual dangers long term dieting can do? Some of you may of heard of these fad diets. Atkins is based on a low carbohydrate diet. It can be done safety if you know what you are doing, but if done incorrectly it can cause the loss of muscle mass, a drop in metabolism, constipation, fatigue and high risk of ketoacidosis. Cabbage soup diet allows you to eat as much cabbage soup as you like throughout the day, along with additional specific foods. You are not allowed drinks other than water or unsweetened fruit juice on days when fruit is allowed. The loss of weight comes from water and muscle, not fat reserves so the weight lost goes on quickly after you begin to eat normally again. It slows the metabolism due to starvation and is deficient in quite a number of much needed nutrients. Liquid diets consist of nothing but shakes and juices to replace regular solid meals. Although the drinks hold some nutritional content, they are less than what you need daily. These diets can be bought on shelves or over the counter. They also come with a variety of issues such as loss of muscle mass, constipation, slowed metabolism and fatigue. Once eating solid food your body will also gain back all the weight that was lost during the fast.
Losing weight in a short space of time is dangerous and doesn’t guarantee that the weight will stay off. Often when you start to eat normally again the weight piles on fast and sometimes you gain far more than you lost. You’ll feel dehydrated due to the fact the majority of the weight lost is water weight. Fad diets involve depriving yourself of much needed calories. If you eat less than what you need you will find yourself exhausted come the middle of the day. Losing weight too quickly can lead to severe diarrhoea followed by constipation. Fad diets and crash diets both deprive your body of necessary calories, fats, carbohydrates, nutrients etc. This all could lead to malnourishment which can cause bad skin, hair, nails as well as other health issues.
Losing weight by making a few small and simple changes to your daily life is far more effective and safer than fad diets (so long as you don’t go over board). Weight is gained when you consume more than your body exceeds during the day. Everyone's basic metabolic rate is different (it depends on your weight and height and level of exercise daily), so what your friend needs to eat to lose or maintain weight may be completely different from what you need. Start by cutting visible fat from your meat, grill food instead of frying, choose low fat options, don’t skip breakfast, aim to eat your five a day, drink plenty of water, exercise at least 30 minutes each day etc. These are also keys to good health, not just weight loss.
