Expression of the cyanobacterial ictB gene in higher plants did not enhance photosynthesis, as shown by an experiment. The experiment first produced two transcanister bushes from which a first generation of 38 bushes emerged. Measurement showed that the bushes were not more efficient in photosynthesis than the wild type. A second generation using the best three first generation plants also showed no significant increase, demonstrating that expression of this gene did not enhance photosynthesis in higher plants.
