Expropriation transfers in south africaWISEMAN BHUQA
This document provides an overview of expropriation in South Africa according to the Expropriation Act 63 of 1975. It defines expropriation and outlines the hierarchy of laws governing it. There are different types of expropriation including compulsory servitudes and outright deprivation of ownership. The power to expropriate lies with various ministers and local authorities. Important procedures include notifying interested parties, serving notices, and registering the expropriation in the deeds office to transfer ownership and prohibit dealings with the land. The date of expropriation determines when ownership and rights pass to the expropriator.
The document discusses Belgium agreeing to allow the opening of a Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) information office in Brussels. The Egyptian deputy chief of mission informed the US embassy that the Belgian government approved the office, which would be led by Naim Khadar, the current PLO representative operating out of the Arab League office. The Belgian Foreign Ministry director for Middle Eastern affairs also confirmed that Belgium was "closer" to having a PLO office, possibly by the end of the summer. He stated it would represent recognition of the "de facto situation" in Brussels but not formal recognition of the PLO or imply special status.
The document discusses a petition to obtain indemnification for lost land certificates as allowed under a previous 1814 act. It determines the petitioner would have been eligible for indemnification and that funds remain available. It calculates the petitioner is entitled to $8,968.52 based on the number of acres in the original land claim.
This document amends the notification establishing Land Tribunals in Kerala by abolishing 6 existing tribunals and establishing new tribunals in their place. Specifically, it abolishes tribunals in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki districts due to decreasing caseloads. It establishes two new tribunals in Thrissur district, and one each in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts.
The document summarizes a dispute in Belgium over the proposed purchase of improved Hawk missiles. A leader of Belgium's Socialist Party publicly opposed the purchase. The Prime Minister said he faced serious difficulties over defense matters due to a lack of understanding of the military threat. The Defense Ministry was concerned this opposition could prevent a successful resolution to Belgium participating in the improved Hawk program.
Belize national transportation master plan 2014Adele Ramos
The document summarizes Korea's experiences in developing its national transportation master plan and provides context on Belize's current transportation situation and alternatives. Some key points:
- Korea established its first national transportation master plan to systematically plan infrastructure investment and balance regional development. It introduced preliminary feasibility studies and a transportation database to evaluate projects.
- Belize's population is growing at 1.9% annually and urbanizing. Its economy relies heavily on services. Tourism is a major industry but the road network needs improvement. Air travel and seaports are currently how most visitors enter.
- Most vehicles are privately owned and concentrated in Belize and Cayo districts. Rapid growth in vehicles is straining the poor road conditions.

The Rights and Politics of Indigenous PeopleAdele Ramos
The document provides a historical overview of the Garinagu people from Africa to their current diaspora:
1) It traces their migration from Africa to Yurumein (Central America) in the 1600s, then to Honduras in the late 1700s and Belize in 1802.
2) It notes their settlement in southern Belize almost 200 years ago and how this influenced Belize's territorial boundaries.
3) It discusses indigenous rights for the Garinagu under international law and the affirmations and legal precedents set by the Belizean government and courts regarding their land and fishing rights and identity as an indigenous people.
4) It presents examples of solidarity between the Garinagu and
Climate change-related impacts on Caribbean fisheriesAdele Ramos
Extreme climate events like hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 had devastating impacts on Caribbean fisheries and fishing communities. Dominica suffered over $1.3 billion in damages, with $11 million to its fisheries alone. Hurricanes damage coral reefs and marine ecosystems, reducing fish populations and fisher income. An unprecedented influx of sargassum seaweed since 2011 has clogged coastal waters, preventing fishing and damaging boats. Caribbean countries have been working to increase climate resilience but more efforts are needed given the scale of recent climate impacts on critical fisheries.
The document summarizes key findings from the Labour Force Survey conducted in April 2018 in Belize. It found that the total population was 395,882, with 262,530 of working age (14 and over). The labour force was 172,086, of which 155,950 were employed and 16,136 unemployed. The unemployment rate was 9.4%, up from 9% in April 2017. Youth unemployment for those aged 14-24 was much higher at 21.3%. Most of the unemployed had been out of work for 12 months or more.
This document summarizes Belize's import and export trade statistics for June 2018 and the first six months of the year. For June 2018, imports increased 10.5% to $170.8 million due primarily to higher fuel prices and increased purchases of cigarettes, footwear and perfumes. Exports decreased 7.3% to $35.9 million mainly because of lower sugar prices and reduced exports of shrimp, orange concentrate and sawn wood. For the first six months, imports rose 3.2% while exports fell 18% mainly due to declining sugar prices affecting earnings.
Belize Labour Force Survey, April 2018 bulletinAdele Ramos
The unemployment rate in Belize rose slightly to 9.4% in April 2018 from 9% in April 2017, despite an increase of over 5,800 jobs. This was due to sharp rises in unemployment in Cayo and Toledo districts, where more people were joining the labour force than jobs were being created. The labour force grew by 7,151 to 172,086, with females accounting for 4 out of 5 new entrants. All districts except Belize saw employment gains, led by Cayo with 2,455 more jobs, while Belize lost 773. Underemployment declined from 25,032 to 21,971 but remained higher in rural areas and among females.

- Preliminary estimates show the economy grew 8.7% in the second quarter, with cumulative growth of 3.7% for the first half of the year.
- Key drivers of growth included a 13.2% increase in primary industries like agriculture, and a 20.4% rise in secondary industries such as manufacturing.
- Tertiary industries (services) grew 2.6%, with sectors like hotels and restaurants up 21.5% compared to the same period last year.
Belize External Trade, July 2014 (PowerPoint)Adele Ramos

The overall CPI increased slightly by 0.1% from the previous month. Transportation, housing, and accommodation services saw price increases above 10%, while food prices decreased by 0.3% overall. Inflation rates varied across municipalities from 1.3% to 9%.
CPI, Inflation, July 2014 (News Release)Adele Ramos
Inflation in Belize held steady at 1.3% in July according to the Statistical Institute of Belize. Higher prices for transportation and housing were the main drivers of inflation, while food prices declined slightly. International airfares increased 24% and motor vehicle prices rose over 3%, contributing to a rise in the transportation index. Home rental prices increased 1.4% across several municipalities. The inflation rate was highest in San Ignacio/Santa Elena at 2.5% and lowest in Belize City and Punta Gorda at under 1%.
The document outlines efforts to reduce illegal logging in the Chiquibul forest through three projects:
1. The first project strengthened law enforcement capabilities by training rangers, acquiring equipment, and establishing monitoring systems. Over 15 people were detained.
2. The second project expanded monitoring and increased public awareness by formalizing databases and improving communication. It found that over 400 illegally logged trees were measured, representing economic losses of over $9 million.
3. The third project aimed to institute sustained mechanisms by contracting rangers for patrols, upgrading infrastructure, and harmonizing bi-national cooperation to confront illegal logging across borders.

The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise boosts blood flow and levels of neurotransmitters and endorphins which elevate and stabilize mood.
The Maya people of Southern Belize have been engaged in a legal dispute with the Government of Belize over land rights since the 1990s. Logging and oil exploration on lands traditionally used by the Maya threaten their way of life. In 2000, an agreement recognized Maya land rights but these rights have not been implemented. A 2007 court ruling affirmed Maya property rights but the Government has appealed. The case is now before the Caribbean Court of Justice to determine ownership and protect Maya customary lands from development without consent.
