Executive Summary Summer 2016
- 2. In this document, I will highlight my experiences and responsibilities as a Student
Geologist for Dahrouge Geological Consulting from May – August 2016, along with what I have
learned and my areas of growth.
This work term consisted of sampling, mapping, and prospecting for limestone and
Volcanic Massive Sulfide (VMS) deposits in areas throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and
Saskatchewan. I worked under the supervision of my manager and geologist, Kelly Krueger, and
also alongside a team of geologists. Being offered this position represents a proud and
accomplished moment because it is a testament to the work ethic I displayed last summer
when I worked under Kelly as well. I left a pronounced impression on the company and that
served as a great foundation to start this work term. Building upon last summer, my manager
relied on me to support and help her with projects, raising my responsibilities and challenges
throughout. With greater confidence I was able to continuously learn and to hold myself
accountable for decisions that were made.
I have worked on several projects, of which the following is the executive summary of the
learnings:
• Completed a magnetic survey to determine the location of dikes in the subsurface.
• Learned how to use a GPS and compass to orient me in a straight line and to get the
bearing of a line off a geological map.
• Observed a manager’s perspective on how to run an efficient project, coupled with
planning and budgeting.
• Use of a helicopter to access properties efficiently and using a GPS to locate our location
to navigate to the desired areas within the property.
• Responsible for leading a coworker and myself into the field, making decisions on where
to sample for limestone. A great introduction to leading a project.
• Described and characterized limestone with the mentorship of my manager and applied
knowledge from my undergraduate studies.
• The vote of confidence from manager to lead and subsequently discussing how those
days went. She had nothing but positive things to say and approved the decisions that I
made.
• Worked alongside a geologist to map in the field.
• Carried out logistics of some projects such as talking to helicopter pilots, booking hotels,
and renting vehicles on behalf of Dahrouge.
• Worked on a VMS deposit with a potential for gold that provided a diverse learning
experience and understanding for different commodities.
As a returning student to Dahrouge Geological Consulting, I had a goal to learn more and
extend my experiences beyond what I acquired in the previous term. I have accomplished this
and my reputation with the company has amplified greatly. Last year, I highlighted my abilities
and meticulous nature that embodies my work. I informed them that I am a calculated risk and
a strong employee. Based on proceeding meetings with my manager, this was apparent and I
