Monopiles and jackets may not be suitable foundation solutions for over 28% of the 6000 turbines planned for installation in European waters by 2020 due to insufficient vessel lifting capacity. An analysis of current vessel lifting capacities against foundation weight demands for different turbine sizes and project depths in Europe found that over 2800 turbines would be unable to find vessels with adequate lifting capacities for monopile or jacket installation. This shortage of optimally sized vessels could increase project costs by 30-60% or cause delays, highlighting the need for alternative foundation solutions without reliance on heavy lift vessels.
