The earliest recorded clock was invented in 1300 BC in Egypt and was a sundial that used a shadow to indicate the time of day. Over subsequent centuries, various mechanical clocks were developed in Europe using church bells, water flows, and mainspring and balance wheel mechanisms. Major innovations included the development of the watchmaking industry in the 1500s, the invention of the cuckoo clock in the 1730s, and the creation of the first atomic clock in 1949, improving time accuracy tremendously.
