Caro uses several conventions of the zombie film genre, including isolation of characters, use of weaponry by the main character to defend against zombies, and an apocalyptic urban setting. However, it also challenges some conventions by having only one protagonist, Jason Flint, alone instead of a group of survivors. This was done to promote a greater sense of loneliness and curiosity in the audience about Jason. The film also aims to make audiences sympathize with Jason and witness his struggle, not just frighten them, unlike many other zombie films.
