IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
PRODUCTS?
 The main aim I had in mind when completing this production task with
my group was that I wanted it to be as realistic as possible, and as close
as possible to a real product, this is why we chose to use simple venues
such as a train station and a local park, because these are very
common places visited by young people who are our target audience.
As the target audience are the same age that I am, when thinking about
whether it appealed to this target audience our not, I was able to think to
myself whether this would appeal to me or not if I was in the audience’s
shoes, and this played a very big part in deciding the appropriateness in
some of the scenes we used in our production.
 The genre and theme of the film we created was action/mystery, this
reason for this was that we all enjoy action and mystery films and
thought it would be a genre we would all have interesting ideas to put
forward to create a good opening scene. Action films are well suited to
the target audience that we have chosen and have that exciting thrill
factor that we had to ensure we got right in our film, the thrill factor of our
scene was at the end where the audience realise that the boy has been
set-up and is about to be attacked.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL PRODUCTS?
 When trying to find ideas for our opening scene we
looked at a number of real products that had been
posted on YouTube by other young people on a similar
course to us, and also famous films with actors such as
James Bond and Will Smith. We were interested in the
topic of a ‘chase/stalking scene’ because if it is good,
the audience would find it very exciting and thrilling to
watch.
 A film that we noticed that had a wide range of camera
shots and similar aspects to what we wanted to create
was ‘Wenke's short film: Chase scene’ on YouTube
(video, right) this is a good example of a chase scene
as the shots are edited carefully so that the scenes
make sense and high quality equipment was used to
film the scenes so that what the characters were saying
was easily understood and the resolution was high.
 I also think that the music accompanying this scene are
diegetic and compliment the action that is happening.
However, I think they could have improved their
opening scene by adding credits and titles, this also
promotes advertisement and the names stick in the
audiences head, this is why for our opening scene it
was essential we included the title of the film, the
production company and personnel names.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL PRODUCTS?
 This scene is from a film called ‘Men in Black’ starring Will Smith
and is more of the inspiration for our opening scene, we thought
of Will Smith as an inspiration because the films that he acts in
mostly involve some sort of chase scene, which is what we
wanted to create.
 In this Men in Black chase scene there are a number of events
that happen that we are unable to recreate and use in our
opening scene as it is too dangerous, illegal or not in our range
of equipment, for example the use of guns and climbing/jumping
off of bridges etc... But this scene was just something that we
aspired to create.
 The conventions that our opening scene uses that this scene
also uses is the element of tension and mystery, so you are
eager to find out what is going to happen because anything
could happen.
 Our film is a long way off the standard of this film but we thought
that in order to make our film to a good standard we could use
aspects of this film to help us, even if it was just at a basic level,
for example – the use of minimal speech, so that the audience is
able to concentrate on the scenes on screen and each individual
can create an image in their head of what might happen next.
When Will Smith jumps onto the bus, he says one sentence and
then there is no speech until he catches the man against the
wall. This keeps the audience engaged.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL PRODUCTS?
 I think that out of the three opening scenes that I have
discussed, this is the scene that is the most similar to our
product, I think this because throughout this scene we see a
number of over the shoulder shots, mid-shots and a tracking
movement of the camera to follow the young girl’s path. There
are more conventions within this scene that are similar to ours,
for example the diegetic music which is an effect that the
audience would expect to hear with this type of scene. In our
scene when we see the Point-Of-View shot of the stalker (Tom
Wells) following the boy (Mason Osborne) down the pathway in
the park, we had added exaggerated breathing to make the
audience feel uneasy and that something was about to happen,
this is known as the pleonastic effect, it is also used in this
stalking scene where we hear the loud footsteps throughout.
 The genre of this film could be horror, action or thriller, and as
the scene is short and doesn’t reveal a huge amount of
information, our film is action and therefore links in with this film,
it is hard to tell what the actual meaning of the full film could be,
though we gather there is an element of stalking involved.
 In this scene, there is a storyline at the beginning to introduce
the audience to the film, there are also credits at the end which
helps to make the scene seem more realistic, like an official
trailer would be, and this is the reason why we included them in
our opening scene.
