This document provides information about the community of Sommarøy and Hillesøy, located on islands off the coast of Norway. It describes the 700 residents and features of the community like the school, kindergarten, stores, and fishing industry. Activities at the local kindergarten and school are outlined, including field trips taken by students to visit fish factories, go whale watching, and learn about marine life. Life in the winter and summer seasons is also summarized.

2. Presentation of our community,
where we start the travelling.
Sommarøy and Hillesøy:

3. In our community there are about 700 People.
They live in Sommarøy, Hillesøy and
Brensholmen.
We have 1 School form 1. to 10. grade, 1
kindergarden, 2 grocery stores, 1 hotel, 2 fish
factories and retirement homes and other
small businesses, like Norwegian crafts and
tourism.
The school are placed on Brensholmen and the
kindergarden on Sommarøy, and we are
working together on the transition from
kindergarden to school.
Most people who lives here work in the fishing
industries.

4. Sommarøy kindergarten
• In mars 2014 we moved to a
brand new building.
• And today we have 20 children
in the age from 1 to 6 years
old.
• The kindergarten is located
near the beach. And in the
summer we can daily walk on
the beach for swimming and
playing. The temperature is
not high in the sea, about 10
degrees, in the summer and in
the winter about 2 degrees.
• On the beach we can find
many different types of shells.

5. The school of Brensholmen
• In the school there is
approximately 100
pupils.
• The school are located
near the beach and the
forest.

6. Whale safari january 2014.
From October / November to January we can see lots of whales in the waters around our island. It is mostly sperm whales and killer whales
as they hunt for herring.
10th January 2014 we went with a boat on a whale safari, and we were lucky!
We saw several sperm whales hunted herring.

october til april.

8. Cod-liver and roe.
We cook and eat it with cod and potatoes. We call it “mølje”!

things we can do in the winter.

10. The winter- and summertime.
• In the winter it can be very cold. The temperature
can get down to -20 degrees, and we can have lots of
snow. Then we can skiing and we can drive on sledge.
• From August to April we can see the northern lights
in the sky. It is a truly amazing light!
• From 20 November to 20 January, the sun is below
the horizon, and we have polar night. We don’t se the
for 2 months.
• In the summer we can have temperature up to + 25
degress, but it is not often. The sea temperature is
not too hot, about 10 degrees, but the kids love to
swim in the ocean and playing on the beach.
• From 20 May to 20 July, we have the midnight sun,
and we love it!

11. Life in the sea.
We learned about different fish.
The most common are: cod, saithe, herring,
haddock, redfish, monkfish, flounder and
halibut.
The fishermen are also fishing shrimps.
