Midas: A Declarative Multi-Touch Interaction FrameworkBeat Signer
Presentation given at TEI 2011, 5th International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction, Madeira, Portugal, January 2011
ABSTRACT: Over the past few years, multi-touch user interfaces emerged from research prototypes into mass market products. This evolution has been mainly driven by innovative devices such as Apple’s iPhone or Microsoft’s Surface tabletop computer. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of software engineering abstractions in existing multi-touch development frameworks. Many multi-touch applications are based on hardcoded
procedural low level event processing. This leads to proprietary solutions with a lack of gesture extensibility and cross-application reusability. We present Midas, a declarative model for the definition and detection of multi-touch gestures where gestures are expressed via logical rules over a set of input facts. We highlight how our rule-based language approach leads to improvements in gesture extensibility and reusability. Last but not least, we introduce JMidas, an instantiation of Midas for the Java programming language and describe how JMidas has been applied to implement a number of innovative multi-touch gestures.

This document discusses several topics related to genetics and cloning. It defines different types of genetic inheritance including dominant/recessive alleles and co-dominant alleles. It then discusses the human genome project, genetic disorders like single gene disorders and chromosome abnormalities, and recent advancements in organ cloning including creating a urethra and reducing rejection risks. It argues the benefits of organ cloning and concludes by discussing the potential for engineering replacement organs.

The document reviews a book titled "Muscle Pain: Understanding its Nature, Diagnosis and Treatment". The review provides the following key details:
- The book aims to bridge the gap between basic muscle pain research and clinical management. It clearly lays out information with summaries and illustrations.
- Early chapters outline basic principles of muscle pain and challenge current theories of acute vs chronic pain progression. Later chapters examine specific types of muscle pain and their treatment options.
- While providing detailed research information, the book disappointingly does not deeply explore complementary therapies or multidisciplinary pain management approaches, except for a chapter on trigger point therapy.
This document outlines the curriculum, rules, and expectations for students in the PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) program at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore for the 2013-2015 batch. How to Maximize Effectiveness of Developers Contributing to Free SoftwareStefano Maffulli
The document discusses how corporations can maximize the effectiveness of their developers contributing to open source software. It recommends that corporations tweak their new product development and customer service processes to align with open source release cycles. Corporations also need to think outside their boundaries and allow developers more freedom to interact and contribute upstream to open source communities. Long term engagement and collaboration with open source communities can help corporations gain benefits like fixes to issues and code improvements.
OpenStack is a project that in a fairly short amount of time has attracted in its ecosystem most of IT giants, becoming one of the largest collaborative software development efforts ever seen. We'll explore how collaboration works in OpenStack and how companies contribute to the project, what drives their motivations. There will also be time to see examples of how development teams are setup internally at some of these companies in order to maximize effective contributions.
Lessons learned during +25 years of Open Source and how those can be adapted to define the Open Cloud and at what we can do to see this idea materialise.
OpenStack community is growing at a very fast pace. The panel will give an overview of this growth, with some metrics and charts. The session will be the venue to discuss and decide how to:
create local OpenStack ambassadors to help promote the project worldwide
give recognition to all the people helping in the success of Openstack
share best practices for establishing user groups for OpenStack.
The panel will be open to comments and questions from the attendees.
The FreedomBox project aims to provide privacy-focused communication and networking services through an open-source small form factor server. The project is led by a technical committee including experts from Tor, HP, and the Free Software Foundation. FreedomBox services will include safe social networking, secure backup, network neutrality protection, and encrypted email. An initial idea is to use mobile phones and QR codes to securely establish communication between phones and their paired FreedomBox. Developers are encouraged to contribute code to the project to expand its services and capabilities.
Designing An Agile Community Program: Funambol Code Sniper v. 2Stefano Maffulli
The document describes Funambol Code Sniper v2, an agile community program for developing open source software. Version 2 addresses limitations of Version 1 by having community members write user stories, prioritize backlogs, and earn points for developing and testing stories that can be exchanged for money or goods. This encourages community involvement and active roles beyond just development. Challenges include cultural barriers, educating on agile practices, and balancing roles. Advantages include earlier user involvement, emergent requirements, and increased incentives for ongoing contributions and maintenance. Open questions remain around estimating stories and defining "Done".

71. The bad news The IT market is exiting its worst year ever with spending dropping a projected 5.2 percent from 2008 to 2009. 2010 is about balancing the focus on cost, risk and growth . For more than 50 percent of CIOs, the IT budget will be zero percent or less in growth terms. It will only slowly improve in 2011.
