- First, we will begin by answering the question “What are ethics?According to George Reynolds, the author of your textbook, Ethics is a set of beliefs about right and wrong behavior within a society. Ethics describes standards or codes of behavior that are expected of an individual by a group to which an individual belongs.That group may be a nation, organization, or profession. I am sure that you have heard of professions such as the medical profession, legal profession, and teaching profession. There are certain standards that are expected of an individual in those professions.
- Another word for that inner sense is one’s conscience.An ethical person has a conscience and that helps them to think about what is right or wrong and causes them to choose the right action.
- This brings us to the discussion of morals. Even within the same society, people can have strong disagreements over important moral issues.Morals define personal character, while ethics stress a social system in which those morals are applied. Ethics point to standards or codes of behavior expected by the group to which the individual belongs. Ethics are about the behavior about a collection of people, whereas morals are highly individualistic and personal in nature. The moral choice ultimately lies in the hands of the individual.
- While computers have solved many problems, unethical use of computers have been on the increase and computer crimes have resulted in many laws related to the use of computers. We will devote an entire project to laws relative to the use of computers.Some examples of laws that we are familiar with and hear a lot about in the news are copyright laws and privacy laws.
