Erwin Chargaff was an Austrian biochemist who immigrated to the United States during World War II and became a professor of biochemistry at Columbia University. Through his experiments, he discovered two rules that helped elucidate the double helix structure of DNA. Chargaff married his wife Vera in 1928 and had one son, becoming an American citizen in 1940 after being born in Ukraine.

• Erwin Chargaff was born on August 11, 1905 and
died while living in New York on June 20 2002. He
was an Austrian biochemist who immigrated to the
United States during the Nazi era, and was a
Professor of biochemistry at Columbia University
medical school.
• Chargaff had one son, Thomas, with his wife Vera
Broido, who he married in 1928. Chargaff became an
American citizen in 1940 after being born in what is
now the Ukraine.
