Establishing an Undergraduate Research Program in a Community College SettingDiana Matthews
Presentation at the 5th Annual Engagement in Undergraduate Research Florida Statewide Symposium.
Presented by Denise Guerin, Bobby Hom, and Diana Matthews (Santa Fe College)
This document summarizes the results of several research projects related to the Internet of Things and smart buildings. It discusses the Green-Line project from 2009-2012 which developed a global solution for reducing buildings' ecological footprint through automated management using transparent, low-cost, and electromagnetic pollution-free technology. It also summarizes the Green-Bee and Green-Com projects which aimed to develop low-emission, low-polluting, and robust IoT technologies, as well as the Green-App project which built intelligent services by exposing sensor data through REST APIs. Further, it discusses the Hasler Smart Living Green-Mod and POPWIN projects related to machine learning and parallel object programming for heterogeneous wireless networks in IoT applications.
Expanding Library Resources with Google Scholar (Matthews)Diana Matthews
The document discusses the use of Google Scholar at Santa Fe College. Google Scholar is used in three areas: at the reference desk, in library instruction sessions, and in library credit courses. It is used to help students and faculty find research sources. Google Scholar is demonstrated to students in classes on how to search for academic materials. It is also covered as part of the curriculum in library science courses offered at the college.
The Ark is a foundation that promotes innovation in Valais, Switzerland. It has 3 fields of focus - life sciences, ICT, and engineering science - and operates 6 technological sites across the region. The Ark provides services to support startups, innovation for SMEs, and bridging the gap between research and industry. It aims to build the technological future of Valais through promoting innovation, bringing together competencies, strengthening competitiveness, and supporting economic growth.

This document provides an overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) and discusses potential applications of extending IoT principles to monitor natural environments, termed the "Internet of Nature."
It defines IoT as low-power wireless sensors and actuators that can communicate remotely to monitor and control the physical world. Examples of existing IoT applications include home security systems and irrigation control. The document argues that existing standalone sensor systems could be improved by connecting them via wireless networks to allow for real-time monitoring from anywhere.
It proposes applying these concepts to listen to and understand forests by developing wireless "EnvTranslator" devices to collect data from trees about stress levels and transmit it via an "Env2Cloud" system for analytics.
