market volatility

Mumbai: EquNev-K1T Capital Hedge Fund, a US market-focused Indian hedge
fund, gave a positive return of 3.24% to investors in August, even as most hedge
funds saw a decline due to sharp volatility in global equity markets on account of
uncertainty around Chinese growth, falling oil prices and timing of the interest
rate hike by the US Federal Reserve .
EquNev-K1T Capital is a 100% systematic hedge fund, trading in the largest 900
companies listed on the US stock market (S&P 900).
In August, Hedge Fund Research’s Fund Weighted Composite Index (FWC) fell
1.87% to 12,443.31, paring the year-to-date performance for the FWC to a gain of
0.2%. The August decline for the FWC was the worst monthly performance since
May 2012.
However, the EquNev-K1T capital fund returned 3.24% in August even as the
benchmark US S&P index gave –6.02%.
Almost all systematic hedge funds lost money in August, including Renaissance
(-5.71%), Winton (-4.3%), Brevin Howard (-3.03%) and Cantab (-10.36%), data from
Hedge Fund Research showed.
“This is what hedge funds are expected to do. Protect investors against massive
“fat tail” days like what August witnessed,” said Kapil Khandelwal, director at
EquNev Capital and board member EquNev-K1T.
EquNev-K1T’s strategy provided Indian investors with risk diversification, portfolio
allocation and a natural hedge against the rupee’s depreciation as an alternative
asset with minimal risks, he added.
