The electronic national agriculture market will cover 250 mandis (
wholesale markets) by next September, ensuring free movement of farm
produce from one market area to another, Agriculture Minister Radha
Mohan Singh said. This would give producers access across markets, save
them from levies charged by multiple mandis and ensure commodities to
the consumer at reasonable prices."The government has drawn a time-
bound programme for developing the agriculture market. The national e-
platform developed for this proposes will cover 250 mandis by September
2016 and, by March 2018, a total 585 mandis will have the system," Singh
said while briefing members of a Parliamentary Consultative
Committee.The government is actively working to bring changes to the
agriculture marketing system in the interests of both farmers and
consumers, he said. The Centre has urged states to introduce an e-market
platform within their territories, so that farmers will be able to sell their
produce in any of the mandis. The Department of Agriculture will provide
free software and help in its customisation to suit the requirements of the
states.The national agriculture market will offer a common marketplace by
providing real-time prices on a national level to the participants of the agri
produce ecosystems. It will create a trading system that will enable
transaction between buyers and sellers from their existing locations. This
will expend the existing market as well as facilitate transactions in places
where markets do not physically exist."A new distribution channel for
procurement and sale will come into existence, which would result in
better price discovery for agri produce, largely benefiting the farmers. The
prices reflected would be determined by demand and supply prevailing
from time to time and shall be captured on a real-time basis," the minister
said.To provide assistance of about Rs 30 lakh per mandi for the software,
the Centre has earmarked Rs 175 crore. Mandis from Gujarat,
Maharashtra, Telangana, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh have got the
approval for the financial assistance.
Jeera settled on short covering tracking firmness in spot demand due to
weak production estimates. The sources stated that overall acreage of jeera is
likely to decline by 15-20 percent as jeera area will be shifted towards castor
seed for better returns. India's total carryover stock is currently estimated
between 0.7-0.8 Million bags versus 2.5 million bags a year ago. As per the
fourth advance crop estimate Production in 2014-15 (Oct-Sep) in Gujarat
was pegged at 158,000 Tons, which is lower by 54% on year.According to
Dept of Commerce data, the export of jeera during first 5 month of 2015-16
(Apr-Sep) is 44,140 tonnes, which is, lower as compared to last year same
period. Jeera (cumin) exports have been 1.55 lt in 2014-15.
Soyabean settled down as overall weakness in global soy markets for
ample global supplies and better than expected harvest results in USA.
Improvement in planting conditions in South America also kept the
undertone on weaker side. Prices of the bean were under pressure United
States soybean processors slowed their crushing pace during November as
NOPA said that its members crushed 156.134 million bushels of soybeans in
November, down from 158.895 million during October. India soymeal
exports in the month of November plunged 91.95% from a year earlier on
higher prices of the soybean in the local market, data released from Solvent
Extractors.
Turmeric settled up as pick up in demand amidst reports of fall in
production in the Southern states kept overall market sentiments firm.
Demand is likely to emerge further at these lower levels. However prospects
of new crop arrivals in coming weeks may limit the uptrend also. There is
concern over production due to heavy rains in south India. Persistent rains in
south peninsula since last two weeks may damage turmeric crop in
Tamilnadu and some parts of Karnataka.
