46. Traveling of the Vikings
In 985, a man named Bjarmi Herjolfsson was sailing Scandinavia to Greenland. He was
carrying food and clothes to his father, one of the first Scandinavians to live in Greenland.
Bjarmi was a good sailor, but he didn’t know how to get to Greenland because he had never
been there. Bjarmi’s friends gave him directions to get there. He spent weeks at sea in
terrible storms. The darks clouds were a problem because he has to use the sun and stars
to find his way across the water.
Finally, Bjarmi saw land. He was looking for Greenland’s ice mountains but saw no ice. He
saw forests and many trees, but his friends had told him that Greenland didn’t have trees.
Bjarmi did not explore this place, or see any people or farms. He didn’t know where he was.
So, he began to sail back home. After a long trip, he saw land again. He had reached
Greenland and his father at last.
Later, a man called Leif Eiriksson visited Bjarmi and asked him how to get to the land Bjarmi
had seen. Leif bought Bjarmi’s ship to make the trip and followed his directions to find the
same land. These stories are from a very old book called “The Icelandic Sagas”. People now
believe that the land Bjarmi and Leif found was North America.

56. Why do I love to travel
31 32 33 34 35
Anyone can travel, and it´s my opinion that everyone should travel. You can use travel
to relax, to see the world, to connect with others who share your interest for traveling or
just to have adventure, but especially to create a collection of many experiences to
remember, as you grow older.
You might be traveling to visit family or friends, for work, because you´re moving or
sightseeing or just to relax on a beach somewhere to get away from everything. The
purpose depends on what you want to do and your personal view of life.
Traveling for business or a family event are common reasons. But the most difficult
question is why some people are happy to spend their whole lives within 50 miles
away of where they were born while others just can´t stop traveling around the world.
These travelers – called long-term travelers-are easily recognized. There is something
in their eyes when they´re discussing their latest trip; it´s a careless attitudes when
something goes wrong or an ability to live in extreme conditions simply to discover a
new village in a distant area of Peru.
Traveling is amazingly rewarding. It helps you answer basic human questions as: how
are we different? How are we the same? Then you want to know about the art and the
history and see what experiences helped people become what they are. For some, this
is sightseeing; for others, it’s simply part of “being”. For those who love traveling, the
question is not simply “when is my next trip?” but also “why can´t I stop?”
