English and film studies personal statment
1. 0University is a place to succeed. My aim in life is to inspire others through teaching. My
chosen area is Film Studies and English literature.
Film has a variety of aspects such as the mise-en-scene, editing, camerawork and sound.
Every aspect gives me insight about a movie. I have developed skills from reading,
researching and analysing particular movies especially from British, American and Indie
cinema. I enjoyed studying “This is England” By Shane Meadows, “„DonnieBrasco‟ by
Mike Newell. Learning about different types of film genre has advanced my knowledge and
has given me confidence to write essays and exam papers.
As hobby I enjoy movies. My favourite genre is horror. I enjoy Wes Craven‟s „slashers‟ like
Scream, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees trilogies.
In addition I have been in an indie movie called „Making the School Band‟. The day was
spectacular and I got to learn about film making, this experience inspired me to want to study
film at A-level. As level has provided the chance for me to film and edit my own trailer.
I had an opportunity to visit the Harry Potter studios tour. This experience taught me the
technical side about film. Another trip I went on was to the Leicester Square cinemas to
watch „Tinker Tailor Solider spy‟ I got to meet Gary Oldman.
English is a diverse course; it developed my persona. Every day I have a desire to write short
stories. Without imagination and creativity I feel lost, poets like Coral Ann Duffy and Sylvia
Plath have given me the inspiration to write confessional poetry. English gave me the
independence to research and analysis themes and historical context. My favourite play is
“Macbeth” because of the drama and the symbolic messages, these layers of meaning create
an image in my mind; this produces good written assessments and good presentations.
I enjoy verbally expressing myself and listening to others opinions.
At Secondary School I joined a theatre club; we would learn about „Macbeth‟ and visit the
Shakespeare‟s globe. This encouraged me to study GCSE drama which built on my
communication and writing skills. This experience has given me the confidence to discuss
topics in lessons and to present interesting oral assessments.
My maturity has increased throughout my life, in year 11 I stayed at Oxford University with
my class in preparation for GSCE exams. This got me thinking more about University.
English and film work well together. They focus on the same aspects such as theory and
narrative. This will help me with scriptwriting. The flexibility of these subjects will maintain
my enthusiasm.
Previously I have worked in a primary school with reception children helping the teacher and
supporting the students.
I think I‟ am suitable for your University. I will be a strong asset. I‟m determined, dedicated
and hardworking. From University I would like to build myself a successful career. I‟m a
2. person who is willing to sacrifice my necessities to accomplish this. In addition I will work
selected jobs during my time at University to stay motivated and enthused.
