This document discusses the history of prostitution in Okinawa and its current state. It notes that after World War 2 and during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, as many as 7,400 women in Okinawa worked as prostitutes for the U.S. military. Today, over 70% of prostitutes choose the profession due to poverty. Many prostitutes have experienced abuse, mental illness, or are single mothers. The document analyzes case studies of individual prostitutes and their hard lives and vulnerabilities that led them into the profession.
