The goal of COPD therapy is to relieve symptoms, prevent disease progression, improve exercise tolerance and health status, and reduce mortality. Management strategies include smoking cessation, avoiding respiratory irritants, regular exercise, and protecting oneself from cold air and respiratory infections. Treatment may involve bronchodilators to relieve breathing problems, inhaled steroids to reduce shortness of breath, antibiotics for bacterial infections, and oxygen for severe emphysema with low blood oxygen levels.
6. 3 - Exercise regularly
To reduce breathlessness and improve ability to
exercise.
4 - Protect yourself from cold air
5 - Prevent respiratory infections
8. Bronchodilators
These drugs can help relieve coughing,
shortness of breath and breathing
problems
beta2-agonists ( e.g: albuterol )
anticholinergic agents ( ipratropium bromide)
- Slower onset of action than the β-agonists but last
longer
9. Inhaled steroids (budesonide)
Corticosteroid drugs inhaled as aerosol
sprays may help relieve shortness of
breath
Prolonged use may weaken your bones
and increase your risk of high blood
pressure
10. Antibiotics
If you develop a bacterial infection, like
acute bronchitis or pneumonia,
antibiotics are appropriate.
11. oxygen
If you have severe emphysema with low
blood oxygen levels .
Criteria for continuous long-term
oxygen therapy :
PaO2 55 mm Hg
OR
• O2 saturation <88%
