Emile Cohl was a French animator born in 1857 in Paris. He became interested in animation after seeing motion pictures become popular in 1907. He was hired by Gaumont studios after confronting them about stealing one of his comic strips. His 1908 film Fantasmagorie was a breakthrough as it used techniques like stop motion and hand-drawn animation. It featured a stick figure encountering transforming objects in creative and humorous ways. The film established animation as an art form.
