Bridging User Needs & Design Requirements: Answers are Only as Good as the Qu...Greenlight Guru
We did the surgery perfectly, yet the patient died anyway… we designed the medical device perfectly, yet the patient died anyway… we followed the regulation perfectly, yet the patient died anyway.
All are iterations on the same theme, i.e., all have the same root cause: answers are only as good as the questions we ask!
Or put another way: what good is designing the right medical device if we are solving the wrong problem?
Is regulatory and quality simply about making sure your design inputs match your user needs, i.e., ticking the boxes? What if your user needs are wrong? Do we need regulation to require us to make sure we are solving the right problems? asking the right questions?
Regulation is all about the interpretation of words and your ability to defend your interpretation.
Using the case study approach, this presentation will cover:
-What is a design input and how do we make sure we have the right ones?
-What's the relationship between design inputs and user needs?
-How do we turn “user inputs” into a viable product and more importantly the right product!
-How do we “translate” user needs to design requirements? Can regs helps?
-How to read between the lines of user feedback, i.e., wants vs. needs?
-How do we sync design requirements and user needs?
-What are the challenges for the future?

Tracks & Challenges
Accelerating Imaging AI
adoption at scale
Eliminating waste in the
oncology care pathway with AI
& digital Technologies
Democratizing cancer care:
Putting the healthcare
consumer front & central
How do we use AI and digital
technologies together to improve
• access to diagnostic services
• referral quality
• patient prioritisation and
• automation of operational
processes i.e. scheduling in cancer
diagnostic pathways?
How to orchestrate Imaging AI
to achieve broader adoption due to
seamless integration, more efficiency
and productivity?
How can conversational AI platforms,
NLP technology and digital
PROMS/PREMS tools help to analyse
and visualise patient data to inform
clinical decision making, treatment
options and service operations.
23
24. #EdisonAccelerator
§ Implementing AI tools effectively is complex and difficult -
resulting in slowed AI adoption
§ Integrating multiple vendors/algorithms is risky and could
lead to errors
§ Using AI clinical apps is a manual & disjointed process
§ Radiologists/organizations need a way to experiment with a AI
algorithms in their workflows
§ Prefer to acquire AI enablement from a single trusted and
known vendor
Track 1: Accelerating Imaging AI adoption at scale
24
25. #EdisonAccelerator
§ Time to implement à optimize by leveraging workflow
management & AI orchestration
§ Unified user experience à open approach to the existing
digital ecosystem #
§ Clinical outcomes à Partner with validators for a defined
clinical use case
§ Startup's onboarding à Build a process to facilitate access to
AI algorithms from a marketplace
Track 1: Accelerating Imaging AI adoption at scale
We are looking for EMEA AI algorithms that can integrate with the Edison™ Open AI Orchestrator that tackle use
cases in domains such as Oncology, Cardiology, or Orthopaedics (automatically generate alpha angle measurements and
pre-populate a radiologyreport with Femoroacetabular Impingement i.e. FAI measurements, AI algorithms to
improve diagnostic accuracy of MR arthrography in the diagnosis of acetabular labral tears)
25
26. #EdisonAccelerator
We are looking for startups to help GEHC bring AI to improve the oncology care
pathways through: referral quality, patient prioritisation, automation of operational
processes and benchmarking solutions.
Track 2: Eliminating waste in the oncology care pathway with
AI & Digital Technologies
The current cancer diagnostic radiology pathway is a manual, multi-hand-off process. This causes
delays in time to diagnosis that could impact patient treatment and survivorship outcomes.
AI has the potential to improve health outcomes and offer cost savings through reducing the time
spent by staff on routine work. GE Healthcare speeds up operational processes for cancer
diagnosis and treatment using the Edison™ Application Smart Scheduling, and their Rapid
Diagnostic Centre (RDC) model.
26
27. #EdisonAccelerator
Track 3: Democratizing cancer care by putting the
healthcare consumer front & central
The way patient outcomes are captured, provider-collected or patient-reported, have significant
limitations (e.g. hand-written feedback forms).
Digital outcome measures are more amenable to standardization as well as provide greater
collection consistency, frequency, and accuracy.
We are looking for start-ups to help GEHC gather healthcare consumer information, then analyse and
visualise it within the Edison™ platform on both healthcare provider system and patient centric
decision analytics platform(s) to inform clinical decision making, treatment options, and service
operations.
