Electromagnetic waves are produced by oscillating electric charges and come in a spectrum ranging from radio waves to gamma rays. The energy of electromagnetic waves decreases as the frequency decreases, with gamma rays having the highest frequency and shortest wavelength, and radio waves having the lowest frequency and longest wavelength. Visible light makes up a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see with our eyes, ranging from red to violet wavelengths. Electromagnetic waves travel fastest in empty space.
