A Fusion Framework for Multimodal Interactive ApplicationsJean Vanderdonckt
This research aims to propose a multi-modal fusion framework for high-level data fusion between two or more modalities. It takes as input low level features extracted from dier-
ent system devices, analyses and identies intrinsic meanings in these data. Extracted meanings are mutually compared to identify complementarities, ambiguities and inconsistencies to better understand the user intention when interacting with the system. The whole fusion life cycle will be described
and evaluated in an OCE environment scenario, where two co-workers interact by voice and movements, which might show their intentions. The fusion in this case is focusing on combining modalities for capturing a context to enhance the user experience.
KnowiXML: A Knowledge-Based System Generating Multiple Abstract User Interfac...Jean Vanderdonckt
This research presents a multidisciplinary approach aimed at generating multiple Abstract User Interfaces (AUIs), which are adaptable for different kinds of users, performing different tasks, using specific devices in various physical environments. The user interface generation framework, called IKnowU, is based on a unified process for interactive system design, which integrates Software Engineering (SE), and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) best practices. This framework is supported by KnowiXML, a Knowledge-Based System (KBS) that facilitates the application of models and the allocation of appropriate visual elements during the generation of AUIs. These AUIs are generated by using problem solving methods studied in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Design knowledge encoded in KnowiXML uniformly manipulates models and UI specifications through the use of USIXML, a User Interface Description Language (UIDL).
This document proposes a model-based approach for the automatic evaluation of aircraft human-machine interfaces (AHMIs). It suggests that AHMIs can be modeled using existing interaction techniques and evaluated for workload, execution time, and adherence to usability guidelines. The approach involves representing any AHMI as a model that can be automatically evaluated, allowing traditional metrics as well as more complex evaluation of how the interface adheres to design standards. The goal is to integrate evaluation into the development process for AHMIs.

ECOVAL: A Framework for Increasing the Ecological Validity in Usability TestingJean Vanderdonckt
The ECOVAL framework provides guidelines and the GAMBIT tool to increase ecological validity in usability testing. ECOVAL defines attributes like objects, tasks, and environment to objectively measure ecological validity. GAMBIT allows producing low-cost, realistic prototypes for remote usability testing. A case study showed GAMBIT improved ecological validity over paper testing, enabling earlier usability problem detection and increased productivity. The authors recommend using ECOVAL and GAMBIT to improve usability evaluations and realize cost savings and other benefits from more ecologically valid testing.
UsiGesture: an Environment for Integrating Pen-based Interaction in User Inte...Jean Vanderdonckt
— Several algorithms have been developed for pen-based gesture recognition. Yet, their integration in streamline engineering of interactive systems is bound to several shortcomings: they are hard to compare to each other, determining which one is the most suitable in which situation is a research problem, their performance largely vary depending on contextual parameters that are hard to predict, their fine-tuning in a real interactive application is a challenge. In order to address these shortcomings, we developed UsiGesture, an engineering method and a software support platform that accommodates multiple algorithms for pen-based gesture recognition in order to integrate them in a straightforward way into interactive computing systems. The method is aimed at providing designers and developers with support for the following steps: defining a dataset that is appropriate for an interactive system (e.g., made of com¬mands, symbols, characters), determining the most suitable gesture recognition algorithm depending on contextual variables (e.g., user, platform, environment), fine-tuning the parameters of this algorithm by multi-criteria optimization (e.g., system speed and recognition rate vs. human distinguishability and perception), and incorporation of the fine-tuned algorithm in an integrated development environment for engineering interactive systems.
Comunicare social.
1. The document discusses multi-fidelity prototyping of user interfaces, which allows designers to create low, medium, and high fidelity prototypes at different stages of the design process.
2. A survey was conducted with 12 participants to evaluate the usability of sketching user interfaces at different fidelity levels. The results showed that fidelity had no influence on sketching time and users were faster than designers.
3. Overall, participants rated the sketching tool positively and preferred medium and high fidelity levels for sketching interfaces. The study provides insights into multi-fidelity prototyping to support the user interface design process.
Towards Task-Based Linguistic Modeling for designing GUIsJean Vanderdonckt
The document presents a linguistic task model for designing GUIs. It begins by discussing Nielsen's virtual communication protocol for interaction and how the linguistic task model is based on this. It then provides examples of how tasks can be modeled at different linguistic levels from goal to widgets. The linguistic task model employs a configurable state diagram to identify task input elements and allow relationships between tasks. It is argued to address limitations in existing task models. Finally, an example usage of the notation is shown to model searching for a flight.
Intelligent User Interfaces: from Machine Learning to CrowdsourcingJean Vanderdonckt
The document discusses intelligent user interfaces (IUIs) and their evolution over three generations. It defines IUIs as interfaces that apply artificial intelligence techniques to human-computer interaction problems. The first generation of IUIs focused on model-based design using simple techniques like decision trees and matrices to select widgets and layout user interfaces. The document outlines some of the early techniques for widget selection and layout that demonstrated initial attempts to apply intelligence to interface design problems.

The document discusses strategies for developing and marketing artists for a record label called "mixed race productions". It focuses on creating synthetic artists tailored to a target audience of 16-24 year olds of various races and ethnicities who enjoy partying, newer media, and modern trends. It explains that a star image must be simultaneously ordinary yet extraordinary to intrigue consumers. A star image is constructed through an artist's representation in videos, concerts, gender, makeup, dancing, attitude and images which build expectations.
The document discusses the symbolic meanings of various elements in the fairy tale of Bluebeard. It describes how blue represents qualities like insubstantiality, emptiness, and eternity, which apply to Bluebeard's cold and murderous nature. It also analyzes the symbolic significance of Bluebeard's blue beard, the keys he gives his wife, the mirrors in his castle, and themes like curiosity, temptation and disobedience that are present in the story.
This document contains notes from a geometry class on angle pairs. It includes examples of identifying vertical angles, adjacent angles, complementary angles, and supplementary angles. Students are asked to solve equations involving angles and find missing angle measures using properties of angles. The homework is to complete an angle pairs worksheet.
This document provides instructions for three topics: how to take portraits, how to use GIMP, and how to make a music video. For portraits, it recommends using the rule of thirds for composition, choosing flattering poses, and considering the background.
